Wow…just read the article in the Oregonian…and the comments. Looking at all the negative comments…he has an uphill battle…

Historically Oregon has been a major stronghold of the KKK. In those days the primary targets were Catholics and Jews. Nothing much has really changed. I wonder how many of the bigots posting these comments had Klansmen for parents or grandparents?

Hmm…wonder. Most of them seem to be from atheist…who want to do whatever they please…thinking it makes them free. But most of them are foaming at the mouth with hatred…

It says his emphasis will be on catechisis and bring Catholics back home. I hope this is true. Problem is that most of the average Catholics in the pew need an education regarding their own faith…but those are the types that won’t show up for faith formation and don’t really listen to the homilies either…
Bishop Sample sounds like an excellent choice. With several other vacant sees, I’m wondering when El Paso (TX), Fort Worth (TX), Bridgeport (CT), and Rochester (NY) will get their new shepherds.

I agree that the “average Catholic in the pew” needs more education. Personally, I was a “one hour Catholic” for many years. There was one parish in my diocese that got a new pastor, and one of the first things he did was order a bunch of copies of the book *Rediscovering Catholicism *for his parishioners.

I can also say that from 1996-2000, I regularly attended a parish in the Fort Worth diocese. Fort Worth was blessed to get a new shepherd in 2005. Within a short time, I noticed when I would visit a parish in the Fort Worth Diocese, or meet Catholics from the Fort Worth diocese, the enthusiasm was much higher. The support for vocations and pro-life apostolates increased exponentially too. I’ve heard that quite a few dioceses (Kansas City-St.Joseph, Covington, Saginaw, and Richmond) have had similar stories.

I remember my current parish going through some turnover several years ago with a new pastor. IMHO the parish got better, with more interest in faith formation, longer lines for confession, and a Holy Hour on Thursday nights. Yes, some longtime parishioners did leave, but IMHO the parish became more vibrant.

I wish Bishop Sample well. I heard some speculation that he was being considered for the Diocese of El Paso, which has been vacant see for over a year. I do hope and pray that the Vatican and the Papal Nuncio will work on appointing a strong co-adjutor to the Diocese of Albany (NY) and appoint someone with a mindset similar to Bishop Sample to both the Diocese of Rochester (NY) and Albany (NY). Personally, I think Rochester and Albany need to have their appointments before Fort Worth, even though El Paso and Bridgeport have been vacant longer.

Our parish is already growing and busting at the seams…due to a very wonderful priest but there are still those that don’t want to listen…it takes good leadership at the top as well.

I suspect that Holy Father thought San Francisco and Portland were more important …being the liberal west coast…

The parish I work at is dying because it is one of those progressive Catholic churches. You should have heard the priest and admin people talking poorly about the new bishop this morning. The father said, “Can you believe he’s against gay marriage?!” I had to inwardly chuckle. Yes, I can believe it, and I’m thrilled.

Oregon has 24% of residents id themselves as “none religious”. Washington state maybe higher. That is why pro -abortion & pro-euthanasia legislation get tested in these 2 states. Seattle’s Archbishop Peter Sartain has been here less then 2 yrs.
Archbishop Sample is quoted in today’s newspaper, The Oregonian “I see it (Portland archdiocese) as fertile ground to plant the seeds of a new evangelization.”
Prayers for these 2 men.

Bishop Sample will certainly need our prayers now, for the reform that is certainly to come, but what a boost for the pro-life people in Oregon. God protect and bless them!

I’ve heard nothing but good things about +Sample. He recently hired a new diocesan music director who is supposed to oversee music in the whole diocese and help bring it back to what it should be. I’m glad he managed to do that before his transfer. I wish more bishops would take that action.

The people in Oregon should feel extremely lucky to have him as their new bishop.

Here is a link to KBVM the Portland Catholic radio station. Within KBVM’s site is a link to listen to Archbishop Sample intro. himself to local press.

My Penance today was to pray an Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and a Glory Be for the new Archbishop. I hope lots of people received such Penance, so he receives many prayers. Welcome to the neighborhood, Archbishop. 🙂

I am thrilled. We had a wonderful Archbishop Vlazny who always spoke out for life and was courageous in the face of “Catholic” politicians who were big supporters of NARAL  and Planned Parenthood. I was hoping we would be blessed with a strong voice for life, for our faith and most important who was adept in responding to the many traps that have already and will be set for him. The forces of darkness are very powerful here in this beautiful state. I believe we have the lowest church attendance in the country. We offered abortion before Roe and were the first state to legalize euthanasia! Aren’t we special? So as Archbishop Sample noted, this is fertile ground for evangilization!

I was very impressed by his responses to the “Snore-gonian.” Consider that our state has a HUGE Catholic presence in the form of wonderful hospitals, charities and schools. Apparently one of our first Bishops was instrumental in human rights legislation.

That being said, what was Archbishop asked? What about priest abuse? What about priest abuse? What about priest abuse?

He answered very patiently and lovingly. I know he like the Archbishop of San Francisco, is walking into the lion’s den. But I also know how the story turns out. I think we are very blessed to have him!

Here is an article about The Oregonian interview. I am not sure if it is the same article which was published in print, or if larger number of questions was asked. One disappointment is that the article has edited Archbishop-elect Sample’s responses “for length and clarify.”

Yeah, they definitely wanted to focus on "Priest abuse, SNAP, women’s roles in the Church and all of the hot button issues.

Nothing about our great Catholic hospitals, charities, active parishes, Religious communities, UofP…

We call it the SNORE-gonian for a reason

Out here in the boonies we call it the Portlandian. I dumped my subscription with them about two decades ago. They are not friends of our Church IMO.

Hi Lisa,

I agree with you. I am ecstatic about Archbishop Sample, but am happy that someone also expressed some gratitude to Archbishop Vlazny. Imperfect? Yes. But as you say he has been quite strong on life issues, if not on marriage/gay rights. Archbishop Sample will inherit an archdiocese that is populated with a number of perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapels and a seminary that is bursting at the seams. That is a legacy that each of us should be grateful for.

B16 has established a bulwark of strong men up and down the West Coast in recent months, from LA to Seattle: Gomez in LA, Cordileone in San Francisco, Sample and Cary in Oregon, Sartain in Seattle. The new springtime is taking shape quite nicely IMO.

Pax Christi,

Jim
