Bishop Robert Walker McElroy was named Bishop of San Diego, California, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop Cirilo B. Flores in September 2014.

Bishop McElroy had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco.

Bishop Cordileone went from San Diego to San Francisco, and now Bishop McElroy is going from San Francisco to San Diego. The two cities are in some ways polar opposites, and both bishops seem to be well chosen for the challenges they face.

May God bless Bishop Robert McElroy in this new ministry, and the city he now serves.

Praying to the Holy Spirit to give Bishop McElroy guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in his service to the Church in his new assigment.

It is interesting that a bishop with a strong “Social Justice” emphasis is assigned to such a busy border town.

It makes sense, just as was posting the USCCB’s biggest proponent of the defense of marriage to San Francisco. It puts them where they can do the most good.

Supports giving Communion to baby-killers.

Or, in this case, he might be refusing to be made a political pawn. Like our pope, it seems he will not be defined by this one single issue.

“Can the Catholic Church in the USA be a ‘church for the poor’?”

“In recent years, the conference of bishops has labeled abortion and euthanasia as the preeminent issues in the political order, but not poverty. This has had the effect of downgrading the perceived importance of poverty as a central focus for the Church’s witness.”

If one can’t even agree to make a stand to defend the most innocent among us, there’s no point in even pretending one cares about the marginalized.

I commend your passion and acknowledge your opinion.

Perhaps, provided what is done or even encouraged complies with the US Laws dealing with immigration and not the"executive action" garbage recently unleashed.

Prayers for the diocese of San Diego and Bishop McElroy awful appointment. Stay strong guys!!! Ave Maria!

I am concerned about this appointment myself. Apparently, many others are too.

Here’s an article from a blogger I trust, and while is word choice is tactful, by reading the tone it is not hard to tell that he is concerned:

On another note, I am praying that strong appointments are made this year (2015) for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe (New Mexico), the Diocese of Victoria (Texas), the Diocese of Rockville Center (NY), and the Diocese of Arlington (VA), which have a bishop who either has reached retirement age or will be reaching retirement age this year.

Specifically, I pray that Pope Francis I will choose Fr. Jim Gould for the Diocese of Arlington (VA), and I pray that Fr. Dean Wilhelm from the Diocese of Austin will be chosen for the Diocese of Victoria.

IMHO, I was pleased with the appointments made within the past 18 months to the Diocese of Albany (NY), the Diocese of Rochester (NY), the Diocese of Grand Island (NE), the Diocese of Fairbanks (Alaska), and the Diocese of Gary (Indiana). Some good shepherds.

I am also praying for the three vacant dioceses in the United States, which are Lexington (Kentucky), Spokane (Washington), and Superior (Wisconsin).

It doesn’t interest me too much. San Diego is one of the biggest diocese in the US and we need a bishop who is focused on more than the social justice issues of the border and the homeless.

The Diocese of Victoria (Texas) got a new bishop this morning. His name is Father (now Bishop-elect) Brendan James Cahill, and he comes from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I don’t think I have met him, but like Fr. Dean Wilhelm (I know Fr. Dean, and I can attest that he is a great priest), Bishop-elect Cahill has some experience in seminary education. From what I read about Bishop-elect Cahill, he sounds like a good pick.

This is also a good experience for a younger bishop. At 51 years of age, Bishop-elect Cahill could be destined for a larger see in the future.

Outside of upcoming retirements (the Bishop of Victoria turned 75 last year) that are listed above (there may be a few more retirements coming), the vacant sees currently in the United States are Superior (Wisconsin) where the last bishop was selected for the Diocese of Boise City, Idaho, and sadly, the Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph. One of Archbishop Cordlione’s protege’s got the Diocese of Spokane (Washington), and I think he will do well there, since he had an interim appointment as a seminary rector at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park.

Let’s pray for our Bishops.

Maybe it is just a thought , but it sounds good they are.close and can help each other. They both have been in the " other" one ’ s " shoes in a way too. That sounds helpful and communicating each other s experience multiplies good ideas.
Just a thought anyway.
