US Bishop Change: Seattle

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to accept the retirement of Archbishop Alexander Joseph Brunett and to name Archbishop-designate James Peter Sartain as Archbishop of Seattle, Washington, USA.

Archbishop-designate Sartain had been serving as Bishop of Joliet in Illinois.
 
Does anyone know much about him? Particularly where he stands on liturgy and sacred music?

I’ve been googling! From what I can tell, he is TLM-friendly. He brought in the FSSP to Joliet. I’ve only seen positive stuff about him. I’m hopeful that the growth of the EF in our Archdiocese will continue…especially to the Southern Deanery!
 
I will tell you that when the accursed Planned Parenthood clinic opened in Aurora, IL he was a very vocal voice in opposition. I know that he spent time outside the clinic unannounced praying the rosary.

Very traditional and has a great speaking voice, sounds like a man and not some meek mouse.

I, too, have been googling and have only read good things about him. But we know that it will be a challenge for him to come to Seattle where he will have to encounter many liberals in the church and out. But the good news is that we have seen a growth in the Catholic population over the past 20 years that has doubled. We have seen an increase of vocations over the years with the newer priests being more traditional and the liberal priests are getting older. St. James, patron saint of our cathedral and patron saint of our new archbishop- pray for us.

He’ll probably encounter conservatives who are just as big a pain as liberals. He’ll probably have both his left and his right hand full!

Sartain said he will bring a pastoral focus to his work and continue the healing process for victims of clergy sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

But first, Sartain said he needs to get to know Western Washington and its people. He last visited Seattle 18 years ago for a salmon-fishing trip with friends.

He pledged to listen before making any decisions. “I try to listen to all points of view as best I can,” Sartain said at a news conference Thursday.

The new archbishop said he brings a pastoral focus to his work, visiting parishes and getting to know the people he serves.

That includes keeping a list of their prayer requests and praying for their needs.
He has three baskets filled with requests at his chapel in Joliet.

“I have a prayer list and I invite people to send me their prayer intentions,” Sartain said. “It’s another way I can express my love for them.”

He’s a good guy who knows how to ‘bish’. I hope we in the Diocese of Joliet are lucky in whoever will take over the leadership role.

Possibly, but he has a track record of at least being tolerant of the Extraordinary Form. He has a big part already in promoting the new translation; which will immediatly set him against Fr. Michael Ryan, the cathedral Rector, who has been a big voice against the new translation.

I think “conservatives” who voice opposition to his appointment or actions will be greatly outnumbered by “liberal” opposition.

That would be my guess, as well. A couple years ago, some people posted the “most liberal” and “most orthodox” parishes in our Archdiocese. My parish priest (our parish came in #2 most orthodox) got a call from the Archbishop who complained that St James Cathedral was voted #1 most liberal. My priest answered…“well…it is.” 😛

Do you happen to have that list handy? (or know where Sacred Heart in Bellingham landed on it?)
