While my prayer was for Fr. James Gould to be given a mitre and crosier for the Arlington diocese, I am very pleased with Bishop Burbidge. During my own discernment process ten years ago, I spent nearly a week on a retreat at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, where Burbidge, up until months before, had been rector. The seminarians who had been there under Burbidge remembered him as a strong leader, and very positive and solid. Quite a few good priests in Arlington were seminarians when Burbidge was at Borromeo, so there’s a familiarity and a respect aspect that will go a long way. At 59 years of age, Bishop Burbidge may get to stay in Arlington for a while.

I’m a little concerned now which bishops (or maybe a priest) will inherit the vacant sees of Raleigh, Dallas, Rockville Center, and Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City has been officially vacant for nearly 18 months - my opinion is Pope Francis will appoint Msgr. Bircumshaw as the bishop any day now, since he has been the apostolic administrator since Wester was elevated to Santa Fe (NM).

Arlington is getting a good Bishop. Bishop Burbidge has worked hard in the Raleigh Diocese for the last ten years and has made many positive changes. He has placed a strong emphasis on vocations. When he arrived there were 8 men in the seminary and this year I believe we have 24 or 26. He will be missed. I hope we are given a good bishop to replace him.

That’s good to hear, thank you. I like what I see so far. Praying for a good replacement for your diocese.
