US Bishop Changes: Fort Wayne-South Bend, Harrisburg, La Crosse, Milwaukee

This morning the Vatican announced Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to make the following changes regarding US bishops:

He accepted the retirement of Bishop John Michael D’Arcy and named Bishop Kevin Carl Rhoades as the new Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana.

Bishop Rhoades had been serving as Bishop of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

He named Archbishop-designate Jerome Edward Listecki as the new Archbishop of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The archdiocese had been vacant since Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan was named Archbishop of New York in April 2009.

Archbishop-designate Listecki had been serving as Bishop of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Ugh! Bishop Rhoades is an amazing bishop. He is as orthodox as can be, and lives the gospel message daily. Fort Wayne-South Bend is very lucky to be receiving such a great man. We always knew he was too special to stay in our little backwater for long.

I thought these announcements were typically made on Wednesdays. Isn’t a Saturday announcement a little unusual?

Announcements are made Monday through Saturday, but the “traditional” day for US changes is Tuesday. That being said, there hasn’t been much of a pattern under Pope Benedict XVI.

One of these bishops, can’t remember which, is the brother of a priest in my area. He has left to be there for his brother’s ordination to the bishopric. He will be back soon though if he isn’t already back. I think that it is one of the bishops in Wisconsin that is his brother.
