US Bishop Changes: Portland, Maine and Marquette, Michigan

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Francis to name Bishop Robert Peter Deeley as the new Bishop of Portland, Maine, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Richard Joseph Malone was named Bishop of Buffalo, New York in May 2012.

Bishop Deeley had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, Massachusetts.

Yesterday, Bishop-elect John Francis Doerfler was named Bishop of Marquette, Michigan, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Alexander King Sample was named Archbishop of Portland in Oregon in January 2013.
 
I had the pleasure of knowing Bishop Deeley way back when he was Father Deeley in the 1980s.

I was an altar server and he would celebrate the mass a couple times a month at my parish. A very nice man, and a good priest.

I wish him all the best in his new assignment.

May God bless him, his ministry, the Diocese of Portland, and all the priests under his supervision.

Thank God, we have a new Bishop! I’ve been wondering who was going to replace Bishop Malone for quite some time now. 🙂

Just wanted to say thank you to you, and to other people, who post info on new Bishop appointments. I’m always interested to read about our new Bishops.

That’s a great website, hadn’t seen it before.

It’s like a baseball almanac, but for Bishops. Maybe we need to create Bishop stats:

Batting Average = percentage of times they stand up for orthodoxy
Runs Batted In = new vocations
Base Steals = conversions

😃 Only if we can have “Bishop cards” to go with it. “I’ll trade you all my Dolans, Wuerls, and Bernardins for that Ratzinger rookie card!” 😛
 
Can somebody explain to me why they move a bishop from place a to place b. Why not keep him in his spot and put someone else in that spot. I know that if the Pope moves him he has to, but why?
 
I was wishing my Diocese of Wichita would get a Bishop for Christmas! 😃 Maybe there’s still time - if Pope Francis has bishops on his mind maybe it’ll happen . . . :bounce:

Lots of reasons. Often, it just has to do with who has the gifts that are needed for a particular locale.

Also, for larger dioceses, it would be very difficult to throw a new guy in there. It helps for them to already have some experience in smaller venues.
