The following changes to the hierarchy in the USA were announced today:
  • Bishop Richard Edmund Pates was named Bishop of Des Moines, Iowa, USA. The Diocese had been vacant since the resignation of Bishop Joseph Leo Charron, C.Pp.S. one year ago today. Bishop Pates had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Bishop-elect Anthony Basil Taylor was named Bishop of Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. The Diocese had been vacant since Bishop James Peter Sartain was named Bishop of Joliet in Illinois in May 2006.
  • Bishop-elect James Douglas Conley was named Auxiliary Bishop of Denver, Colorado, USA and titular bishop of Cissa.
  • Bishop-elect Oscar Cantú was named an Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio, Texas, USA and titular bishop of Dardanus.
  • Bishop-elect William J. Justice was named an Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco, California, USA and titular bishop of Mathara in Proconsulari.
Details of recent changes can be found here.

I was wondering when Little Rock was going to get a bishop. They’ve been without a bishop for a while now.

Anyone have any incite as to the orthodoxy of Bishop-elect Taylor?

How is a diocese governed w/o a bishop?
Usually the priests vote on an Apolostic Administrator (usually the Vicar but not aways). (This is if the regional Archbishop cannot handle the extra duties.) He does all the day to day duties (meetings, confirmations, all but the oils) while there is no imminent Bishop. It sometime can be just a priest but sometimes with the title of Msgr.

In New Ulm, it is a priest selected by his peers, (it used to be the Archbishop of St Paul/Mpls but he could not handle the dual workload) in Green Bay the Archbishop of Milwaukee still holds that title in transition.

The administrator can be appointed - or the retiring bishop can stay in place as administrator until a new bishop is appointed (as in the case of Birmingham), or in the case of Little Rock, the consultors of the priest synod elected Monsignor Hebert on June 29th, 2006.
The new bishop elect will be ordained (to the episcopate) and consecrated for the Diocese of Little Rock, June 5th, 2008

It appears we have a good one in Lansing… God willing.

Maybe Bishop Vigeron will be assigned back to Detroit ??? That would be a big WOW!!
We will see. I am hearing rumblings of an announcement. Nothing hard yet.

I’m trying to find out about Taylor too. I looked up his schools (St. Meinrad - Indiana, North American College - Rome, Fordham - New York) and my best guess is that he’s going to be pretty orthodox. St. Meinrad looked like it could go either way, but the school in Rome is in close contact with the Vatican, and claims to honor and follow the Pope. Fordham, from what I’ve read on other strands, sounds good, in spite of the Jesuit association!

Also, from what I can make out about other appointments Pope Benedict XVI has made, we can probably trust that he will be solid. Thank God for our Holy Father! I pray for long life and health for him every day.

I know that Taylor has a passion for ministry to the Hispanic population, which was a large segment of the population in Oklahoma, and also is in Arkansas.

Here’s a link to the diocese’s page on the new bishop:

Yesterday at the news conference in Little Rock with Bishop elect Anthony Taylor, the Latino population of
the Diocese of Little Rock was quoted at 50% of the Catholic population of the diocese. Bishop Taylor has taken Psalm 37:11 for his coat of arms for the diocese and spoke very much about the poor and marginalize.

“The insight was this: being a faithful Christian requires more than just saying prayers, obeying the Commandments and trying to get your own soul into heaven. If you’re only interested in your own spiritual welfare in the next life, you don’t really believe in the redemptive power of the cross of Jesus Christ.”

Bishop Taylor also stated that he was inspired by Martin Luther King when a 14 year old in his discernment toward the priesthood.

“And when the Oklahoma priest started flashing his famed social-justice cred, linking the witness of MLK to his call to priesthood, jaws were seen dropping in the room.” A quote from below.

And there you have it.

I pray that it is the SPIRITUAL welfare he’s concerned with and not pre-occupied with the material welfare of his new flock.

Does this hint at liberation theology to you?

NO. He is pro-life and he recognizes the fact that for us to get to heaven we cannot do it as only individuals, (part of the American puritan/protestant/ me and Jesus concept of salvation) but also as a Community of believers (that is the Church.) We help each other to get to heaven. In order to grow Holy, we serve God and one another and those that cannot, or are hinderd to do for themselves.
… in February 1974 it dawned on me: most of the people I might serve as a social worker are far poorer spiritually than they are materially. If something could be done to feed their souls, give them the same spiritual resources that I received growing up in a happy, secure, faith-filled Catholic home, they would be far better equipped to deal with adversity. That was the day I knew God was calling me to the priesthood.

My Vocation Story
It seems to me IMHO, his early concerns over the poverty of others opened his eyes to their poverty of their spiritual condition… he doesn’t seem to me to be a man that puts the material needs over the spiritual needs…
For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry and fed thee: thirsty and gave thee drink? Or when did we see thee a stranger and took thee in? Or naked and covered thee? Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and came to thee? And the king answering shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. Matthew 25:35 - 40

Thank you SO MUCH. I’m encouraged and full of hope for our wounded diocese.

Welcome, Bishop Taylor!

I just wanted to clarify about the (Pontifical) North American College. It is the residence for US students of the various pontifical universities in Rome. They typically actually study at the Gregorium or Angelicum.

How do you see the Diocese of Little Rock as wounded? According to the statement made at the news conference LR is considered a “plum diocese”.
Care to elaborate?

I don’t know where the blogger got the part that peoples jaws were were dropping in the room. (he wasn’t there) I believe it was a personal editorial comment by the blogger. Up til then the blogger was just using actual clips from the Arkansas Catholic, then he seems to be throwing in a zinger to inflame those concerned about Fr. Taylor’s orthodoxy.
That particular blogger is associated with Busted Halo, here is the link of the review of Busted Halo Website at Catholic Culture.

IMHO, after doing more research with the help of freinds, it seems Bishop-elect Talylor was custom made ( by God) to be the Shephard of the Diocese of Little Rock

I don’t know what the poster you are asking thinks, but it hurt many to lose our previous Bishop and to be waiting two years for his replacement. It keeps a lot things in limbo so to speak…

Dear Bernie:

Ever hear of cell phones? I imagine one of Whispers contacts sent him what was going on while he/she was there at the conference. This blogger has deep contacts ( both in US and Vatican) and knows what is about to happen long before it is made public. He has been interviewed by many different people and is a personal friend of Archbishop Chaput. And he isn’t negative on the Church, quite the contrary. He loves the Church and everything about her. He is encouraging every one to go to their pastors all over the US and ask them to ring their bells at 4 PM EDT to welcome the Pope to the US next Tuesday. And he isn’t associated with Busted Halo. I checked the Catholic Culture site, they have nothing on his blogsite either positive or negative. In otherwords, he’s never been reviewed. Busted Halo may have
him on a side bar as a blog site, which I have not checked, but please if you have facts to disprove the above, please let bring them forth.
