NewUlm according to Mother Church condoms are an intrinsinct (sp?) evil. There is no way that a unperferated condom can be morally used. This is not something we can dissent to. This is related to Onan’s sin in Gen 38. Also condom use is grave matter. I do not believe condoms prevent AIDs in the long run, but even if they did catholics must be against their use in all cases. Since condom use is grave matter encouraging using them might save a life in one singular use, but could also bring death to a soul in one singular use.

I hope this does not come across as rude it is so hard to put body language into print. I write this with respect and love.

I too want to apologize if I came off rude. :o

This teaching is no less difficult than when St. Paul was exhorting the Roman pagans to stop having sex with multiple partners, children, what have you, and stay faithful to their marriage partners and live chaste lives. It seemed impossible to them then, and it seems impossible to us now. But it is not.

The Church expects large groups of people to give up sexual activites, not just for a year, but for life - these include homosexuals, divorced Catholics, priests and religious.

Even if they have no vocation to celibacy, too. And if they have to do that, why can’t everyone else ? Or is everyone else so sex-obsessed that this would be asking too much ? “I want to be sexually active, & to hell with the consequences, because I’m a sex-obsessed idiot” - is that what they’re saying ?

Those groups of people you mention are not living in family units with a mother and father sharing the same bed. We actually advise them not to engage in that type of close proximity with people of the opposite sex/same sex as the case may be, for obvious reasons. Married people (infected through sex or otherwise) need to be considered.

I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with CRS stating this, IF one is not going to follow the teaching of the Church regarding the proper use of sex (i.e. homosexual conduct, adulterous conduct, promiscuity) then take some protective measures. I’ve never understood why people think…ok…have an affair, but don’t compound your sin by also using a condom…how ridiculous a statement is that, but that is, in effect, what many of you good people are saying.

It is the Church’s mission to evangelize the world about freedom through Christ. It is the Church’s mission to spread Truth. It cannot give on one hand and take away with another. It cannot spread Truth and then give them the lies of the world. There are plenty of places to get information about condoms, plenty of people eager and willing to drag the world into the proverbial gutter. The Church’s mission is to save the world from it.

Yet sometimes the only voice they hear is the Church…so there AREN’T always other places to get the information.

It’s not the Church’s job to educate about condoms. Condoms are not the answer and are diametrically opposed to the Church’s mission. 🙂

Yes I did respond to your points. Condoms are not intrinsically “evil”, they are just what they are, objects and a tool. Disease prevention is one of the applications of this tool. The world outside Church walls is not black and white, good/evil, it is an infinite shade of greys. This is about disease prevention and saving lives for thousands to millions of people.

You cannot assume a ideal Utopian application of any policy decision once it hits the real world, but policies need to be open to change in the Church, or the Church becomes irrelevant to the real world. Condom use as the 3rd option here is about saving lives, no more, no less. The CRS is consistent, as this is a “pro-life” application of Church teachings.
I agree. This is a public health issue.

Also telling folks that condoms don’t work as some keep saying, just makes the problem worse. True, they aren’t 100% effective, but they are better than nothing. But convicing people that they are 0% effective just encourages them to not use them at all - thus spreading the disease.

What a moronic complaint.

Get out of your glass houses and go down to the DMV and visit with the customers there. These are the people who CRS is working with. Condoms are part of their world. If CRS’ customers were faithful catholics they wouldn’t be very worried about catching AIDS, would they?

I read the slam-job on CRS in my email from Ignatious (perhaps Indignant) Press. I am also familiar with Archbishop Dolan. Dolan rocks, and knows what he is doing.

So figure out where you are getting this wrong.

You should probably watch your charity and read this entire thread before calling fellow Catholics morons. 😦

Saying that certain people are incapable of grasping the teachings of the Church so let them continue on the path to death, spiritual and physical, is not compassionate.

The teachings of the Church aren’t only for fellow Catholics, Catholics who are in good standing, white middle-class Catholics,or those who are highly educated in the First World.

The teachings of the Church, the good news of the Gospel, are for everyone.
