BALTIMORE — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has approved a plan to draft an amended edition of the English-language Liturgy of the Hours for use in the United States.

The conference’s Committee on Divine Worship, headed by Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans, had recommended the action in light of new liturgical texts, including the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, the revised Grail Psalms and biblical canticles, and revision work begun by the International Committee on English in the Liturgy.

The vote at the general assembly of bishops’ Nov. 13 morning session in Baltimore involved only the Latin Rite bishops, who passed the proposal by 189 to 41, with one abstention.

The preliminary vote means the Committee on Divine Worship will begin translation and editing. It will present a full draft to the conference when its work is completed. If approved, the draft would be submitted to the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for approval.

The new edition will include changes in light of the new edition of the Roman Missal. Hymns will use English translations of Latin hymns provided by the International Committee on English in the Liturgy, which will also be consulted on translations of several regularly used prayers.

Thank God! We can finally send the absolutely terrible hymns from the 70s like “Sion Sings” to the trash bin where they belong.
 
Hmm… I’m not so sure! Look at the press release again. They’re only going to begin translation and editing!

…and once that’s done, the conference has to approve the work they’ve done. Remember how much hullabaloo it took to get the English version of the Roman Missal completed and approved?

… and even once that’s done, the Vatican has to approve it. Recall that they often bounce their own preferences back to bishops’ conferences for further study (and a re-vote)?

Maybe 2020 was too optimistic a guess on my part… 😉
 
I highly doubt they will trash the NAB readings for something more faithful. But at least it’s in the right directions. I also agree that those terrible cheesy hymns from the 70s have got to go. Bring back classical and timeless one and if you want to make new ones work off from the classics. Organic growth!
 
Excellent news. I can hardly wait. I am guessing 10 years, and hoping 5.
 
Sounds very nice. I would love to pray the Liturgy of the Hours but I am not sure how.
 
So for my wife and myself to buy the new translation when it comes out, will cost about $300

I’m not happy about it.

It doesn’t seem obvious to me at all. One can be supportive of a new translation yet lament the cost of the books; one can be unconcerned about the cost, but not like having a new translation; or, one can be disappointed in both at the same time.

I would imagine that if you put aside $2 per month, you’ll have the cost before it comes out. 🙂
