I’m glad the USCCB bishops are taking a stand on this. This professor is taking great liberties against the teachings of the Church and should be obedient to those teachings. Otherwise, he shouldn’t be called “Catholic.”
Why do you get so upset? The USCCB - Filled With Sound And Fury…
And signifying NOTHING
There’s a hot story making the rounds in the Catholic blogosphere…
WASHINGTON (March 22, 2007) — The Committee on Doctrine of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) declared that pamphlets published by Professor Daniel Maguire of Marquette University on contraception, abortion, and same-sex marriage “do not present authentic Catholic teaching.”
“The views about contraception, abortion, same-sex ‘marriage,’ as well as the very nature of Church teaching and its authoritative character, cross the legitimate lines of theological reflection and simply enter into the area of false teaching,” the Doctrine Committee said. “Such mistaken views should not be confused with the moral teaching of the Catholic Church.”
On June 19, 2006, Professor Maguire sent two pamphlets to all of the Catholic Bishops in the United States, one entitled The Moderate Roman Catholic Position on Contraception and Abortion and the other A Catholic Defense of Same-Sex Marriage.
OK, fine. The USCCB finally grew a back-bone, albeit extra teeny-tiny, but a back-bone nonetheless. But here’s the $64,000 question… what’s going to be done about it? And the short answer is… absolutely nothing.
Professor (and ex-priest, of course) Maguire will continue to dump all over the Vatican mandated Profession of Faith and The Oath Of Fidelity On Assuming An Office To Be Exercised In The Name Of The Church from 1998 that was put out by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Interestingly enough, that same CDF was honchoed at the time by a certain Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.
Here’s an interesting little tid-bit from the Oath of Fidelity that you may want to know about;
*Canon 833, Nos. 5-8 obliges the following to make the profession of faith: “the **rectors ***of an ecclesiastical or **Catholic university **at the beginning of the rector’s term of office”; and, “at the beginning of their term of office, teachers in any universities whatsoever who teach disciplines which deal with faith or morals”…
And, of course, the loophole that The Heretical One slipped through was the wording “at the beginning of their term of office”. Maguire was hired in 1971. With that said, the Marquette official website identifies the Rector of M.U. as Father James Flaherty, SJ, who was appointed Rector in 2005 (as of 1970, the President of M.U. and the Rector are two separate individuals).
Looks like Fr. Flaherty isn’t doing his job very well, is he? I would imagine that he took the Oath of Fidelity, wouldn’t you?
But back to Maguire. You may want to take a gander at some of the outright heresy (and pornography) that was spewn forth from his mouth. Such as;
~ Good Sex & the Wisdom of World Religions.
~ Sex and the Sacred.
~ The Spirituality of Sexual Pleasure.
Make sure you listen to the preview of his *Good Sex & the Wisdom of World Religions *lecture where he makes such good fun of The Holy Bible. And he also refers to himself [when he was a young priest] as a “horny 29-year old virgin”. Also, he alludes to St. Augustine as “poison” in his The Spirituality of Sexual Pleasure. What a guy. I don’t know about you, but I sure am glad he’s a tenured professor at a Catholic university.
And the bottom line is that this guy will continue poisoning young minds at Marquette. His superiors will smile and look the other way. And the USCCB will pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
Let me scream this from the rooftops ONE… MORE… TIME…
SATAN HAS INFILTRATED AND IS DESTROYING THE CHURCH FROM WITHIN.
Our Lady of Akita has wept 101 tears already. How many more must she weep?
(Note: all references can be found on my blog posting)
Gosh… lemme see, Holy Mother The Church is spit in the face on a daily basis, and I’m suppose to look the other way? Sorry, I can’t take such a cavaleir attitude towards heretics and those who support them. Why do you get so upset?
And your point being? That rationale rates right up there with a doctor telling you “well, at least we got MOST of the malignant tumors. You should be happy”.This sort of thing has been going on for over 25 years. But it happens FAR LESS now than it did then. Back in the early 80’s guys like Maguire would be giving lectures at the invitation of the Archbishop.
Yeah… I’ll relax. Good idea. In the meantime, Catholic kids are having their faith poisoned at MU. Excellent advice, Ham.That’s happening less and less. You’re screaming about something that has been going on for a long time and is in a pretty substantial decline. Relax and realize that the pendulum is swinging rather quickly toward orthodoxy.
As a matter of fact… I do! Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ has sent His Holy Mother to us to give us the warning that the work of satan shall infiltrate even into The Church. Isn’t it GREAT that Jesus did that for us??? But hey… I’ll tell Jesus just to relax, right?Besides screaming from rooftops, do you have any ideas or good news to report?
Evangelization? I just made you aware of the Warnings given at Akita, didn’t I?Are you involved in evangelization projects and adult catechesis? These might be healthy outlets where you can make a difference in helping the return to orthodoxy. I don’t know, maybe you do these things already.
*“No need to freak out”. *Billions of dollars in lawsuits because priests rape kids, and their bishops protect them.Try not to get so upset. Yes, there is evil in the world and even in our Church. We don’t need to freak out, we need to ask ourselves what are the things that we can do to make it better and effect change.
Good Arguments!Gosh… lemme see, Holy Mother The Church is spit in the face on a daily basis, and I’m suppose to look the other way? Sorry, I can’t take such a cavaleir attitude towards heretics and those who support them.

*“No need to freak out”. *It’s finally coming to light that millions of dollars have been stolen from parishes by their own priests.
*“No need to freak out”. *Untold numbers of souls are being led to hell by outright heretics. And to make matters worse, our so-called shepherds either look the other way or pay lip service.
*“No need to freak out”. *The Warnings given by Our Lady of Akita get louder and louder every day. And many just shrug their shoulders.
Hey Jesus and Mary, listen to Ham… No need to freak out, just relax.
Gee, all of a sudden I feel like a rousing chorus of Kumbaya, or maybe even On Eagles Wings.
What? Jesus and Mary won’t listen to one of your fellow Catholics? What in the world are you saying?Good Arguments!I am confident when I say Jesus+ and Mary+ Shall not listen to the Ham1.
God+ Bless You.
Why do you get so upset?

Your utilization of this word is ad nauseam. You must criticize less and assert yourself more. Please share some intelligible information so that all may gain from a productive thread instead of a non - productive one.Relax
I am in total agreement with you here.I don’t know,
Can you honestly believe this PREPOSTEROUS statement.??? There is nothing of any value here. There is no need to debate your words are clear.Yes, there is evil in the world and even in our Church. We don’t need to freak out
You are confused and babbling about quotes from another post. Read his/her posts again to get the meaning and please stay on topic of this thread. What? Jesus and Mary won’t listen to one of your fellow Catholics? What in the world are you saying?
btw…I don’t think Jesus or Mary “freak out” over the happenings of man on earth. They are probably “relaxed,” though often saddened, no matter what we do.
I am responding and quoting directly from this thread, and I’m completely on topic. You said you were “confidant” that Jesus and Mary would not listen to another poster. You are confused and babbling about quotes from another post. I agree, I don’t think that Christ nor His mother would “freak out”. Christ is, however, concerned enough to send His Blessed Mother to give us dire warnings of really nasty things like satan infiltrating The Church, and that God will no longer be mocked.btw…I don’t think Jesus or Mary “freak out” over the happenings of man on earth. They are probably “relaxed,” though often saddened, no matter what we do.
To a large degree, I agree with you. But allow to to reinterate that we adhere to Faith and** Works**.I agree with the US Bishops in their actions. Hopefully, this is a sign of increased warnings of Catholics who are teaching things contrary to the Church.

Respectfully and May God+ bless You.
Really, next time, just keep it to yourself.Jesus+ and Mary+ Shall not listen to the Ham1.
I know you are upset. I don’t really get the reference to Kumbaya and Eagle’s Wings. Are you assuming that my position is represented well by those songs? I don’t like those songs and I don’t attend a Church that plays them.Gosh… lemme see, Holy Mother The Church is spit in the face on a daily basis, and I’m suppose to look the other way? I know that you’re content with the modest corrections that have only recently begun to take place. And yes, I do believe your position is well represented in these gingles. But since you asked, I believe that attitudes such as yours are more correctly embodied in the old song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. I’m not trying to be insulting, it’s just that after I read your responses, that particular ditty pops in my head.I know you are upset. I don’t really get the reference to Kumbaya and Eagle’s Wings. Are you assuming that my position is represented well by those songs? I don’t like those songs and I don’t attend a Church that plays them.
25 years ago,'eh? So my *“doctor who got **most **of the tumors”*analogy holds true. BTW, sometimes things are done better by shouting. I seem to recall someone who threw the moneychangers out of the temple who was rather loud and had a whip, no less. But hey… I guess that guy should just “relax”.My post was hitting the point that:
- Things are better now than 25 years ago so let’s not be completely pessimistic. Things have been a lot worse before in the history of the Church. The way things got better wasn’t by shouting, it was by doing and praying.
I’m glad you used the house on fire analogy… the very first thing that is done, is that someone actually does yell FIRE!!!. Someone actually does call the Fire Department. No one can be saved until people know what’s going on. Unfortunantly, when it come to a house in flames, or a Church being destroyed from within, many choose to look the other way.
- Since obviously, things need to improve what can WE (you and me) do about it? Because just shouting about how bad things are doesn’t improve things. When a house is on fire the way to make things better isn’t to stand at the curb and yell, “FIRE” repeatedly. It’s to go into the house and save people. So, what are we going to do about the trouble?
The word “Liberal” was never used nor was it even insinuated. The word that was used was cavalier. It’s precisely because of the “oh, I trust that many of the bishops and priests will do the right thing” mentality over the past few decades, is exactly why roughly 2/3’s of our bishops protected kiddie-rapists “priests”, and the vast majority of our priests chose to stand behind a Wall of Silence (Shame?) instead of coming forth and exposing the obviously open secret that there were rapists and open homosexuals in their ranks. Please leave off the insinuations that I am a liberal because I sometimes question your methods and posts. Because I choose to remain optimistic about our Church and many of our bishops, priests and laity does not mean that I am not conservative and orthodox.
Riley, I agree with you that at least, the bishops “took a stand”, so to say.Good for the Bishops in taking a stand against a blatent dissident in the Church. It’s outrageous to think that the positions Maguire espouses could be somehow deemed legitimate Church teaching.
