No, I think SamH was saying that excessive taxation and regulation of business can destroy jobs. I would also add, Obama’s obsession with failed green energy and opposition to building new oil pipelines also prevent the creation of new jobs. Generally, liberals don’t understand how economics works. They think the government can actually manage an economy.

No, they honestly believe that government can do something other than strut about in busy idleness while constantly honing the re-election strategies for their next term which will be spent constantly honing their re-election strategies…You get the drift.

I guess the fact that the world is changing along with the skills needed for the job market of the future does not figure into it even one little bit…only economists seem to be taken with that weird idea. Otherwise why wouldn’t our elected officials be desperately seeking solutions to the education and training needs of our populations rather than staging Quixotic fights with windmills?
Oh, that is indeed a factor - the ever changing world and the skills needed for success therein. But, as you know, education is key here - and the Democrat/left/teachers unions are opposed to innovation to help more American kids get access to a quality education. But now I’m off topic, sorry.

Government is necessary. But they generally get in the way of economic progress. The only time they help things is when they lower taxes and remove excessive regulation - and try to reform entitlements which cause ever greater dependency.

Opposed to innovation? That’s a first. Do you mean letting education go the way of fast food chains (with product quality to match) by franchising education out on the free market?

You mean the do nothing, oppose everything arm of the government now don’t you?
To be honest a government that did nothing the last 5 years would have helped the economy much more than the mess that we are dealing with now. Do you have any idea how much time and money has been wasted by businesses just attempting to be compliant with ACA the last three years?

But the government can destroy jobs - as Obama has proven for 5 years.
Sam, how many billions $ did Pres. Obama collect for ‘shovel ready jobs’ and where did it go? How many people got jobs?

No, I mean holding minority and poor kids captive in failing schools because they don’t want to lose their power. What a shame.

The US ruled the world when education was under local control. Now that the federal government runs education where does the US rank?

This. It both are truly obsessions. Repress oil production to fuel fears of AGM and promote “green” energy.

I deleted my post. it wouldn’t have done any good but make me feel better. 😃

Okay, so we have different ideas on how to fix the economy, create jobs and help the poor get off assistance. That’s fine - disagreement is a good thing when searching for solutions in a democracy. So point me to the republicans’ offering of comprehensive legislation that would address all three (the economy, jobs and the poor). What do they propose, suggest, support or envision? Just one glimpse of vision, I beg you (and no, Trickle Down economic theories don’t count - I mean real, drafted legislation supported by some kind of forecasts of job creation, economic growth and poverty numbers).

The jobs created and saved by the economic stimulus law that President Barack Obama signed on Feb. 17, 2009 cost at a minimum an average of $228,055 each, according to data released yesterday by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

In a report released Wednesday-“Estimated Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on Employment and Economic Output from October Through December 2010”-the CBO said it now estimates the stimulus law cost a total of $821 billion, up from CBO’s original estimate that the stimulus would cost $787 billion.

In the same report, the CBO estimated that in the fourth quarter of 2010 there were somewhere** between 1.3 million and 3.5 million **people who were then employed who would not have been had the stimulus not been enacted. “CBO estimates,” says the report, “that ARRA’s policies had the following effects in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2010: … Increased the number of people employed by between 1.3 million and 3.5 million.”

Some stats on Math/Science when the US ‘ruled the world’ in education…pretty please?

I don’t have a clue what they were - and there is a good chance those numbers don’t exist with any degree of accuracy.

Just another example where the GOP continues to attack the neediest people in the country. Wanting to cut food stamps for people who are poor is a shameful vote and I’m glad the Bishops are speaking out about this. Thank God there is a Democratically controlled Senate and President.

“According to Bishop Blaire, how the House chooses to address hunger and nutrition programs has “profound moral consequences.” He added, “Struggling people are not seeking a life of government dependency, but rightfully deserve decent paying jobs to provide for them and their families. Even with evidence of a modest economic recovery, the economy still has not improved the standard of living for many people, especially for the poor and the working poor. More than four million people have been jobless for over six months, and that does not include the millions more who have simply lost hope.”

Yeah…Just ignore all the murdered babes that the Democratic Party has caused with their legislation on abortion…
Oh, and all their anti Catholic bigotry and homosexual agendas…You can’t possibly be Catholic and a democrat.

Where’s the innovation you were talking about? I see all kinds of things being tried (at least locally) to improve kids’ academic achievement, from feeding kids breakfast to giving them extra help after school. Any info on what ‘innovations’ have a better track record?

Here we go again, the party police. Didn’t the Pope just have something to say about that? I think it’s can be paraphrased ‘cease and desist’.

So, your ‘ruled the world’ proclamation is just that - yours?

Actually he said no such thing but don’t let that get in your way.
