US Bishops Web Site introduces New Mass Translation

It can’t happen soon enough for me. I am going to seriously consider composing a Gloria since it seems most OCP and GIA composers can’t follow simple instructions like “don’t change the words”.

When you do, I’d like a copy to give to our music minister. Between that and the Our Father that sounds like it was written for a Pre-K music class, it can be a real struggle to get through Mass without grimacing.

Not quite seeing a sledge hammer at work here. This look more like tweaking than wholesale changes. Upon what do you base your assertion that a “sledge hammer” was used?

More faithful how? More literal? Yes. Better at conveying a sense of the holy in a commonly understandable manner? I’m not quite sure.

Almost seems like they put the latin text into babel fish and printed it.

For those who prefer English, better someone like Msgr. Knox, a master of the language, than the dorks who produced the NAB. Compare Knox’s version of Ephesians 5 wit that of the NAB. I read Sunday and though I gave it my best, the meaning tends to get get lost. Reading Knox, one gets what Paul is saying, even though the translation is far from literal.

I had read from Cardinal Pell that most South Africans don’t attend an English Mass. And it would seem there was not a lot of catechesis.

I love the translation. It is so beautiful and uplifitng and the deleted words have been returned!

If Spanish, Italian, French, German etc speakers can have a literal translation, why not us English speakers.

Come on, let’s not be overly dramatic. The South Africans who hated the new translation aren’t trying to “subvert truth”, they just prefer the other translation.

Cardinal Pell is from Australia not South Africa so he may not exaclty be up to speed on South African mass attendance. But either way, the “target audiance” roundly rejected it. You are correct that there was virtually no catechesis done, but how much really needs to be done? Its merely a new translation.

Some people, if they had the changes explained to them and the importance of them, your spirit, consubstantial, etc, may find the translation more palatable.

As you many know, Cardinal Pell heads the Vox Clara committe overseing the translation by ICEL.

Its great that some like it, but let’s be realistic about the fact that some will not like it. Are they any less “Catholic” because they like another translation better?

It does not make them less Catholic, certainly not. Some will not like it but vise-versa some don’t like the current translation. But if we are going to pray Mass in English lets have a proper transaltion that accuratly conveys the meaning of the Latin original.

These are but a few examples of the new transaltion opening up the beauty, theological richness and scripturalness of Mass even more so than the current translation.
