US Catholic Bishops to Consider Statement on Assisted Suicide

I hope they do come up with a statement condemning it. Assisted suicide is murder plain and simple.

The statement has already been drafted, I’m sure. It’s just a matter of whether or not they’ll approve it at their meeting in two weeks. If it’s good, I’m sure it will be approved. Usually by the time these things make it to the voting floor of the USCCB, they have already gone through the ringer.
I do look forward to reading it when it is released.

Keep us updated. I am praying for them to approve it. I however agree with the poster who said they should condemn it. Strongly opposing something and condeming it are two different things.
I am in favor of a strong out condemnation that leaves no room for error as to what the Church teaches.

I always thought this was a really difficult issue…even more so than abortion.
Its easier to argue against murdering an innocent baby than it is to argue against allowing a terminally ill patient to end his life.
My uncle had ALS, and he asked each of us (me, my dad, mom, aunts, uncles, etc) if we would kill him. A few years after his death I as a PBS special about a man with the same disease who traveled to another country where a physician legally assisted in his suicide. I think it was called “the Suicide Tourist” or something like that, and it almost convinced me that assisted suicide should be legalized.
However, I now see why the church condemns this. Ultimatly, it is Gods decision when a person lives or dies. We hear about these miracle cures everyday…they do happen. I can defintily sympathize with anyone (and family member of anyone) suffering from a disease like cancer or ALS…but it makes me wonder how many of these people who felt they needed to end their lives, could have been cured with faith

The article mentions the interesting tidbit that the bishops will be voting on the document as they meet in one of the two states that has actually legalized physician-assisted suicide.
It is also interesting that Jack Kevorkian (may God have mercy on his soul) – the poster child for the assisted suicide movement – passed away less that two weeks from the time the vote will take place. That will no doubt heighten public interest in what the bishops have to say.

According to the CNS article, the statistics seem to back up your thoughts. It says a Gallup poll showed Americans are more divided on this issue than any other.
