The Energy Department has confirmed the United States has carried out a subcritical nuclear experiment at an underground test site in Nevada on Thursday (local time).

The test was aimed at gathering ‘‘scientific data that provides crucial information to maintain the safety and reliability of… nuclear weapons without having to conduct underground nuclear tests,’’ the department said.

Some anti-nuclear groups are concerned that the Bush administration is trying to accelerate its efforts to develop new nuclear arms through such tests.

Anti-nuclear groups have criticised and continue to urge Washington to stop the tests, saying they are undermining the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty on nuclear weapons.

The US argues that subcritical tests are fully consistent with the nuclear test moratorium it has maintained since 1992.

The news sounds ho-hum when America does it. What happens when you substitute Iran for United States?

So do you support Iran having nuclear bombs when they have actually stated they would wipe Israel off of the map and are known financiers of Hezbollah and other Palestinian “liberation” organizations (not talking about the org called the “PLO” here, just in general)? I don’t support anyone having nuclear bombs, not even us.

I think nuclear bombs in the hands of stable governments are a good thing. This way we don’t have conventional World Wars. MAD keeps us all safe.

Well, even in the hands of stable governments you have crackpots in high places which would betray their nation (either in giving nuclear secrets or possibly selling a nuke to a rogue group). Now, in this world that we live in I realize that it’s not likely for us to be getting rid of the bomb anytime soon, however I wish it were an option.

There is a difference between a research reactor and a breeder reactor.

I hope that the preceding statement comes from a position of either:
  1. Simple desire to “Flamer-Bait” and start a fight;
  2. Ignorance of what the Iranians have said in multiple statements or a belief that they haven’t meant what they’ve said in any of those multiple statements;
  3. Extreme hatred of the USA or of the Bush Administration: or
  4. You know what the Iranians have said and want to see them carry it out.
Only you know which of those it is.

I just wish that if it is “Flamer-Baiting” that you stop. It contributes nothing to the discussion and, in cases like this where the subjects in questions have made repeated and public bellicose and threatening statements towards Israel, and have paid for terrorist attacks against Israel, just makes you look ignorant or worse. I know that you’re not ignorant, and I don’t want to think of worse.

Israelis have also said similar things about Palestinians etc and currently are the nuclear power in the Middle East and are intent on staying that way. Such statements made by either side seem to be nothing more than hyperbole typical of people in the Middle East since Biblical times. And I believe Iran has stated that they would attack Israel only if the US attacks them first. Iran isn’t crazy enough to attack Israel on it’s own. Israel’s arsenal would destroy them.

Nope. Just offering an opinion in a charitable, non-offensive way as per the forum rules. 🙂

I’m aware of what Ahmedinijad (sp.?) has said. The appropriate international response should be along the lines of “yeah, sure pal: in your dreams”.

Iran (even with a nuclear weapon) is about as capable of wiping out Israel as I am of becoming president of the United States.
Traditional Ang:
  1. Extreme hatred of the USA or of the Bush Administration:
Let me put it this way. I hate what the Bush adminsitration is doing in the name of my beloved country. Rampant militarism; incessant meddling in the affairs of other countries; so-called “diplomats” like Bolton and Condi Rice who would prefer to bludgeon their counterparts rather than negotiate; the slow bleeding of our military strength in Iraq while other nations, notably China, grow stronger. None of this, IMO, helps the United States.
Traditional Ang:
Only you know which of those it is.
It is my way of pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of the Bush Administration foreign policy, that’s all. Condemning Iran for aspiring to the same technology the US develops as a matter of course.

Robert:

If I understand correctly, these tests have been a ongoing policy of the last several Administrations, including the Clinton Administration which conducted at least two such tests. Those who oppose the Bush Administration’s conducting of such tests can’t say that this isn’t something other Presidents, Democratic and Republican, haven’t deemed necessary to preserve national security, so they have to bring in something else in order to object to the tests. That thing is the alleged American hypocrisy in objecting to Iran’s Nuclear Weapons’ Program.

Those responding to them can either deal with the off-topic discussion and present evidence that it isn’t hypocritical to deny Nuclear Weapons to a Nation intent on the annihilation of another nation, most of whose people were the subject of humanity’s only systematic attempt to eliminate an entire race of people, or they can state that their posts are off-topic and that they can’t be replied to and shouldn’t have been posted.

Which would you rather have those of us who feel that bringing up off topic issues such as the Iranian Nuclear Program are unfair in this thread do?

JDNation:

You are incorrect on both counts.

While it is illegal to say “Slaughter the Arabs” in israel, It’s pretty much standard fare to say "Slaughter the jews in the PA. And, although at least one Israeli leader has offered the Palestinians a country with its Capitol in Jerusalem, the PLO/PNA has refused to amend the part of their charter which calls for the desruction of Israel and the slaughter of all Jews in the ME. And, Then there’s the subject of the Hanas Covenant which calls for the same and justifies these with quotes from the Quran.

Several of us have posted quotes from Iranian leaders calling for the destruction of Israel and the development of nuclear bombs for that purpose. The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has both denied the reality of the Holocaust and called for the destruction of Israel, while doing everything he can to protect and advance the Nuclear program whose purpose is just that according to previous Iranian leaders.

I’m sorry, but this really is off topic - If you really want to discuss the iranian nuclear program, you should start another thread, but, before you do that, please understand that you have been badly misinformed.

The tests were to test how volatile nuclear devices were to non-nuclear explosives. Useful knowledge to know to help prevent terrorists for using explosives to cause nuclear devices to explode.
