US fast-food workers staging nationwide strike

The AFL-CIO seems to be a bunch of strange ducks with their constant suppose for gay marriage.

Why were they called in to do this protest in these smaller areas?

There goes the dollar menu. How much business do you think these fast food places would do if everything we take for granted goes up 1 to 3 dollars?

Our radio station said the average wage for a McDonald worker if $9.25
The unions want to expand their rolls so they can take $5.00 an hour from their new 15/hour wage leaving the workers where they started while enriching themselves.

Unions are a corrupt leftist anachronism that need to hurry up and put their other foot in the grave.

Last month CNBC interviewed a McDonalds worker who wanted $15 per hour because she had worked there for 13 years. She was making well over the minimum wage but it was not enough to support her as a single mother with three children. When questioned, about why she had not moved into management after all that time, she admitted that she had been offered the assistant manager position, but turned it down because she did not want the responsibility, just the $15.

In my opinion, when you take on the responsibility of three children outside of marriage, you no longer have the luxury of avoiding responsibility at work.

One of the things I learned early in life while working for less than minimum wage (for my father), is that people also have a responsibility to live within their means, even if that means budget amounts of zero for tobacco, alcohol, recreational drugs, pimped out rides, video games, fancy cell phones, and brand name clothing. You do not have the right to be too busy to clip coupons, shop smarter, and budget prudently.

If you are poor, you should not be eating out, but cooking at home. Why is it that eating out is considered a normal part of life? You can make a much healthier meal at home for less cost.
Do not ask me, since I agree with you. Why are so many kids had out of wedlock? Why do people charge themselves into credit nightmares?

Lack of education on things most of us take for granted, most likely. I sympathize when you have a single mother working multiple jobs who has little time to cook, but then again, God’s plan was never for mother’s to raise children alone as a general rule to begin with.

In the end, the why matters not. The fact is the poor DO eat fast food, and the prices of cheaper goods directly affects them

you. missed. the. point.

The taxpayers pay for Mcdonald’s educated workforce and for their housing and for any other benifits the workers are receiving from the govt since McDonalds does not pay a living wage.

**Result is that McDonalds is the ultimate welfare queen **
Perhaps if you didn;t make obtuse points, they wouldn’t be missed.

Blaming McDonalds (when there are thousands of other companies who hire a cheaper workforce) is silly.

If you want to blame anyone (and blame is a dangerous game), start with their parents, the school system that educated them, their own life choices, and frankly, the flip of a coin that is our life circumstances.

I am for a decent wage, but the reality is this will be accompanied by a higher cost of goods, like it or not. We can live in fantasy land where the company should eat the cost, but that is folly. They will not. The customer will. I am willing to pay it, or else I will go elsewhere for cheaper goods.

Historically, a job was “created” when Person A had a service they needed performed and Person B had the skill needed to accomplish that service, and thus, the two parties agreed on a fair price for that service. The fact that Person B had bills to pay had nothing to do with the job or the payment rendered; it was simply a positive biproduct of the relationship.

That is the only economics can viably ever work. Artificially creating jobs that have no value like FDRs New Deal, or inflating wages based on not a single economic principle doesn’t work. I favor a just approach to treating workers, and fairness in terms of what the person’s skills are worth, but we have to deal in reality if we are going to discuss these things.

I agree. We all end up subsidizing employers who don’t pay decent wages, or give full time hours.
That much is true.

Which is why the same people who hate the treatment of the average worker should hate the government’s tinkering with business by way of the ACA, given the looming loss of health coverage and shift hours for employees. But their views are inconsistent, to say the least.

I firmly believe that no one who professes to be a Christian can find anyway in their heart to accept people of any occupation being paid poverty wages. I would suggest if you want to know what it is like to work 12-14 hour days and get no more than 25K/year quit your current job and give it a shot. And to make it fair you have to trade in your cars for a clunker that does not run, your house for a ratty one bedroom apartment, empty your food shelves and fridge, get rid of your credit cards and nice new cloths and empty your savings until all you have is $30.00. You can use the money for clothes from the local $1 store.

Try being a day laborer with a construction company, a nurse aid, a fast food worker, cook, janitor, or lowly admin assistant for a college. Forget your degree because most people with a degree don’t get that all mighty 6 figure income and not for the lack of trying either. We have become a nation of poor and rich. The middle class is all but dissolved. And that is a pity.
You must have missed my prior post. My previous minimum jobs included newspaper delivery, babysitting, dishwasher at a catering facility, and fast food worker at more than one place. Those jobs were motivation for me going to college in the first place. And decades later, I’m still educating myself and finding new ways to make money.

Now why should somebody with no skills automatically be entitled to (handed) a living wage?

FWIW, the ever increasing divide between rich and poor is due to current insane economic policy under this administration. The artificial interest rates (also known as printing money) benefits the wealthy, but hammers everyone else. I’ve been beating the drum for almost a decade that rates MUST rise, and that government spending must be reduced. Artificially raising wages will simply damage the economy further, notably be forcing people out of the workforce.

Thats not necessarily true, what about when CEOs and other high level employees get HUGE raises, prices do not go up as a result of that…what difference would this be?

Even if prices did go up, I would not mind and would be willing to pay more for a happy meal, if I knew it meant the workers were getting paid a wage they could live on.

I doubt they will get $15. though, I tend to think it will more likely be around $12. per hour. which would be about an additional $142. each week for an employee averaging 30 hours a week, so that is not that much money, when compared to the profits some of these companies rake in.
Have you bought a Happy Meal? One basic hamburger Happy Meal in my area cost $3.49 plus tax which is about $3.82. That is quite a bit to pay for a toddler to have lunch when traveling and as someone else stated, who wants to pay $8.00 for a combo. Many of us eat off the dollar menu and that is already going up.

McDonald even now offers deals to attract customers. People will not pay extra and it will hurt everyone employed at McDonalds. It is like gas. They can charge higher gas prices but people are driving less to conserve.

would you say the majority of your co-workers were similarly blessed with parents who could afford to homeschooling? Congrats on college, where are you attending?
Perhaps they could afford it if their property taxes weren’t so high to pay for a terrible school system. In other words, people should be able to keep more of their money and decide which schools they want to support. But this is beside the point.

If you have a job that requires no skills, no difficult training, and work that is not particularly demanding, it is unjust to demand more money than your job is worth.

I would hope not. People need jobs and they need to be gainfully compensated for them. This"trickle a few pennies down to the idiots mentality" in this country needs to stop. Wages have been fairly stagnant since the early 80’s or at least have not kept up with the cost of living, that is unless you are among the top 1%.

All jobs require skills and training, and are in fact demanding. Costumer service jobs are some of the most irksome, annoying and under appreciated employment options out there. I will say it again, no one should be forced to accept poverty wages for any job. And once again, heaven help us if the those who repair our roads, build our houses, clean our public buildings and toilets or pick up the trash stop working. The cities will stink in a week or less and disease will be rampant, not to mention rats and other pests.

When the average wage in a nation is poverty there is something wrong, very wrong.

Maybe the masses are sick and tired of being paid chicken feed for their work and then being expected to live on it. Perhaps people fail to realize that most products we buy are marked up as much as 4000%. Yes that $100.00 you forked over for (whatever) really cost a mere 2 cents. There is no need for a thing to increase in price if the wage goes up to $15/hr. No need at all.
Do you have a source to back up what you claim? Most companies operate on a very thin profit margin.

Who is forcing them? They CHOOSE to work there and they CHOOSE not to get a better paying job. It is ESPECIALLY problematic that they are demanding 15 dollars an hour - HIGHER pay than the average recent college graduate gets.

You have no way of knowing if a person chose the job they work or not. That is sure arrogance. I have worked numerous jobs that I hated because at the time that was the only job I could get. I have known too many people with College Degrees, including myself, who have had to work “low end” jobs that are not even related to their fields of interest and study because of lay-offs, mergers, company by-out and jobs being sent overseas. These people include "Geophysical Engineers, Nurses (who by the way make lousy money for what they do), Biologists (myself and friends), and Chemists.

All too many “jobs” depend on bogus requirements and “who you know” and “who’s fanny” you will (guess??) Too many jobs are granted to people simply because they have a degree and have managed to buy their way up. For everybody’s cry babying about unskilled laborers I bet you like that service when you want to eat out, take a break and have to use the company potty, wet the bed in a hospital, want that cash out of the bank (don’t fool yourself tellers get squat for what they do…been there did it), or need to pay for the groceries you just shoved in your cart.

No Christian should find another person’s job as menial and beneath them. I think it would be good for all of us (have done it) to work two or three jobs. You can keep you fancy high end position, but go ahead and add that part-time hamburger swinging job, toilet scrubber to keep you humble. Then give that money to the poor.

You ignored my last post to your pity party, have you considered many of us started out very low and improved our material station in life?

In that case Walmart is a bigger welfare queen than McDonalds.

Again, you perpetuate this false notion that anyone who isn;t mired in poverty now as we type was someone handed a silver spoon like Ricky Schroeder and didn’t have to work an ounce.

Not only is this statistically not true, but you don’t know squat about anyone you are talking to, and sound ignorant when you continue to act as you do. Neither do you know anything about the profit margins for these companies you keep discussing. My first job was a cashier at Hardees. Then I shoveled mulch and planted trees at a nursery for two years - the physically hardest job I’ve ever had. Now, I run a small business in engineering. For college, I was too poor to pay my way, so it was scholarships, or loans, or work part time. I busted my hump to avoid loans.

Point being, some people’s circumstances are better or worse than others, and we need to treat each person as the good Samaritan would. We also need treat each person fairly and pay them what their efforts are worth.

AGAIN, a payment for services rendered was historically always based on what a person valued the service at, not how many bills the performer had to pay. That isn’t financially tenable in a closed system of finance with finite cash flow.

I do not know whether salaries are fair, though it is something I’d consider, since these people are my sisters and brothers. I’d also ask why so many people today are trying to raise families and love adult lives on jobs that historically were never intended for that. There are many reasons for that. A stagnant economy. Lax immigration enforcement that creates a workers surplus for unskilled work. Out of wedlock births, and a rise in divorce.

I am not going to simply entertain a “you have to double our wages” approach until we work on each of the other root problems too. But good luck proposing that; I’d love to see a focus on the perils of out of wedlock children and premarital sex, but the same powers that demand higher wages won’t allow for you to educate the masses on their own personal responsibility.

Fast food workers work at jobs that could be done by trained monkeys. If you start to pay them 15 an hour, what will you have to pay the people who have actual skills or work in risky occupations?
