Is This Old News? - Pope Sued

I read this story on the BBC news front page today but it seems to me old news. Is there anything in this story that is different to a few weeks ago when i last read about it? If not then it seems like the BBC are just wanting to keep the sex abuse story going!

I’m not sure, but I think its fresh news. A local TV station in Milwaukee posted a similar story on their website yesterday.

A new lawsuit filed on behalf of a victim of sexual abuse by Father Lawrence Murphy claims three cardinals, including one who is now Pope, told the Milwaukee Archdiocese not to discipline Father Murphy and to let him continue as a priest – in essence, blaming the Pope for sexual assaults against hundreds of children.

“It specifically names for the first time ever, Vatican officials that were directly involved in a case,” said Peter Isely, Midwest Director for SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

Yes. It’s old news in so far as it is one which involved Father Murphy. However, previous coverage was on a pending lawsuit and it is quite a surprise that they have decided to proceed with it and it seems to be that only this one victim out of 200 who remains keen to pursue a lawsuit against the Holy Father. One wonders why.

Mr Anderson says his client is not seeking money but wants the Church “to fundamentally come clean, to come forth with all documents that have evidence of crimes against children for decades”.

From the Cbs58 report, it says:

The lawsuit seeks the release of confidential Vatican files detailing clergy abuse allegations and unspecified monetary damages.

This story in on ZENIT today. It is definitely a case of the liberal media wanting to damage the Church. It is consistent with all socialist governments; the first thing they go after is Christianity

Lawyers for abuse victims have been trying to find a way to get at the Vatican for years. They’re always looking for “deep pockets” that can be pressured into adding to the amounts they’ve been able to obtain so far from individual dioceses. Plus, attorneys for cases like these love publicity, because they think it makes the defendants more willing to settle. The claims against the Pope should be dismissed and probably will be.

That is a general truism. A lawyer is always looking for deep pockets. Like a shark with a scent of blood, once he starts, a feeding frenzy follows. Unfortunately all our judges are also lawyers (along with most of our politicians). The only thing a savvy citizen can do is to avoid swimming with the sharks.
