The heterodoxy is apparently at variation with male dominance and obedience.
“Then God Said,”Let Us Make Man in our Image, after our Likeness.”
God Created man in His Own Image;
Male and female He Created them” (Genesis1:26-27). Midrash suggests that Lilith was the first woman created, along with Adam. Lilith was an assertive woman, who reportedly demanded complete equality, even apparently refusing to have missionary sex with Adam. Lilith is mentioned in (Isaiah34:14 NSAB).
Many Modern women will not find it difficult to identify with Lilith.
“There is neither male nor female; you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians3:24).
Acts 4:19-20’.
In stark contrast, Genesis2:21-25 gives a different version. Eve is different from Lilith.
Again, the male clergy demands unswerving obedience from the women.
Hebrews5:8 –“Son though He Was, He Learned obedience from what He Suffered”.
However, perhaps we should also remember Peter’s statement:
“”Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God you be the judges. It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”
Ultimately, the solution is a joint equal dialogue.”Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord.” (KJV Isaiah1:18)
I think identifying garb may be OK but a habit is strictly out of the 15th century. Nuns don’t need that and it would not be a benefit, as far as I can see. I favor some type of identifier because the nuns in my neighborhood are here studying at a theological college and are often taken for lay students. Even worse, no lay female wants to be taken for a nun. Neither do nuns need convents, except for the retired religious, in my opinion. With the small numbers, of nuns convents are just wasteful and many now which were built earlier have serious design flaws and violate the fire codes. That’s the status of my parish’s convent…
In my experience, I have not heard really anything from nuns which does not follow Catholic teaching. A very few favor ordination of women.
My friend the missionary nun wears no habit and is quite conservative. She is a cancer survivor and before her third placement overseas to work with women in a developing nation she gave me a gift – a memorial book on the election of Barack Obama.
With all this, I consider nuns to be in self-managed religious orders, responsible to the pope. Basically they get to decide what they want to wear and what their ministry will involve. Its their business.
