I’ve seen a lot of press over this, but I don’t feel very well-informed about what’s at issue… maybe ‘much ado about nothing’?–as we’ve become accustomed to with the last few years of media reporting on the Catholic world?

Any explanations?

The original article seems to imply that the process may turn out to be much ado about nothing. It was certainly not viewed that way when it was announced a year or two ago.

I don’t recall the exact basis for the visit, if one was ever announced. But female religious were concerned that their orders, which often focus on social justice issues, would have their practices (whether clothing, protest activities, etc) curtailed by Rome as a result of the visit. Conservative critics of some of these nuns were gloating about exactly that.

If you can find threads about this from when it was first announced, you can get an idea of the feelings swirling around this, and the potential issues people were concerned with on each side - unfortunately, the search function doesn’t seem to be working properly. But the distrust led some to advocate that the nuns not cooperate with the visiting officials.
