The military isn’t a service industry.
No, it is service that provides for the common good - in this case defense. Not everyone agrees that they need the same amount of defense, but we all get it anyway because that is the way communal decisions work in a society. Similarly, the Postal Service provides for the common good. It is spelled out in the Constitution. Interestingly, the establishment of a permanent standing army is NOT provided for in the Constitution.
The post office is an inefficient…
I could say the same thing about the army.
…consumer service who’s been outclassed repeatedly by private endeavors…
I could say the same thing about the military being outclassed by private security services. Of course law does not allow these services to engage in war and stuff. So there is no real competition, is there?
and only continues to exist due to a legislated monopoly on carrying letters.
And the military continues to exist because of a legislated monopoly on making war.
If you’re proposing it should be propped up by tax dollars when it fails to generate revenue, then why should people who don’t send mail be forced to subsidize those who do?
There are plenty of things propped up by tax dollars that people do not choose to utilize: National parks, highways, city parks, sidewalks, airports, senior centers, need I go on?

I wish the post office would just be allowed to die already. It’s outlived it’s usefulness with the efficiency of private companies. Never once has the post office delivered a package to me on time.
Fedex has been atrocious with package delivery the past few months. A package from them being on time has been the exception, most have been days late and one completely lost. USPS and UPS, has been fine though.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. There’s no need for a government run postal service anymore like there was in the 18th or even 19th century.

I’ve never been a fan of fedex either. UPS has always been my preferred carrier.

That is your opinion. Most people agree that it is an essential service, even more than in the 18th and 19th century.

How can any service maintain operations if they don’t generate enough income to cover expenses?
people are blaming the new guy but the standard changed a while ago, the program was called Operating Window Change (OWC). the problem is not every facility followed the new standard and tried to maintain the old which run up the overtime.

management at the USPS is not paid properly to encourage people to apply, nepotism and favoritism is rampant. why go into management when you can make a lot more as a craft member with the overtime and have fewer worries and union job protection for even the most serious crimes.
As part of Phase II, the Postal Service also revised its First-Class Mail service standards, eliminating overnight delivery for single-piece FCM and shifting some FCM from the two-day service standard to three days.

UPS and amazon deliver everything to my door step. I agree fedex is garbage and I hate using them. But as bad as they are the post office is worse. The only theyre good at in my area is losing packages and delivering junk mail and being rude when you come into the post office an hour before closing because they don’t feel like working any more that day.

Maybe in your area they’re better, but here in southeastern Kentucky they are worse than useless.

Believe it or not most of the carriers and supervisors and even managers are Democrat;
Fact checking: How do you know that? You don’t and can’t ever.

A PO supervisor of a hub told me that mail is seriously slow and behind since the pandemic.
Also, mail is no longer consistently delivered in both rural and urban areas in parts of the country because of well known funding problems.

Stick with the tried and true walk in voting.

In our group of offices, we were told that about a month ago BUT it has never happened. We are still delivering every piece every day. Once in a blue moon, management cuts us a break and holds back the bulk rate catalogs on Mondays and deliveries them on Tuesdays. Usually though its business as usual. Everything goes that day. I delivered here in Florida and I’ve delivered near Washington DC. I have friends in other offices in other states and they say the same thing. Its the same. And I explained about the overtime above. Its due to the overwhelming amount of packages we are getting. The dispatch truck driver is getting paid overtime to wait for the outgoing mail from each route. The carriers are getting paid more to make extra package deliveries, management gets I’m sure gets compensated for moving all the mail and the post office sticks with underfunded rates. Our trucks are falling apart daily, alot of offices are understaffed but yet we get the mail delivered pretty well.

I’ve talk to alot of my friends in other offices - fact! I know its not an exact science but you get the feel for things when you listen. The mail is slow because of the pandemic because everybody is ordering stuff on line now. You can’t find alot of the stuff in stores so they get it online. I’ve had many customers tell me that they don’t even have to leave their houses anymore because they get everything online.

it was slow before the pandemic and it was in debt before the pandemic. they have a management problem and the workers take advantage of it.

yes, packages are an issue but not to the requested billions of dollars. why aren’t they hiring temp help?
We are still delivering every piece every day
that was supposed to change under OWC and is one reason they are in debt. they were supposed to cut-off the mail at a certain time.

We are all wondering that too but we get mixed messages. The latest being “why get a job when you can sit at home and get paid unemployment”. I don’t believe that but I have my own personal thoughts on why the Postal Service can’t hire more help.

So they say but our cut off time 9:00 am, the next day it was 9:30, the next day it was 10:20, then the cut off time became irrelevant again. Don’t know why but that how it goes.

There’s only a few things that would help the post office.

They need to cut retirement benefits, they need to raise prices, and they need better management.

None of those things are likely.

Bring back commemorative stamps. Foreigners used to love them.

That letter is postmarked the day I dropped it in the mailbox out front of a USPS location 1 hour before the last collection of the day. The location my PO Box is at.

I’ve been getting my mail late or not at all for going on 2 years. There’s nothing in that envelope but a blank index card. I mailed it to myself to see how long it would take to get to my PO Box. 40-50 feet from the mailbox I put it in.

It was delivered yesterday. 12 days to go from the mailbox to the sorting facility 3 miles away and back to my post office box. 6 mile round trip. 12 days. 1/2 mile/day average.

It has nothing to do with packages. It has nothing to do with overworked carriers.

It is simply evidence of a broken system.

Oh, and you should have seen the look on my neighbor’s face when I knocked on her door and handed her the new checks from her bank that were put in MY mailbox. Pretty sure that one WAS on the carrier.

Carriers can make mistakes. I’m sure I would make a few myself if I were a carrier. But we get each other’s mail once or twice a month. Sometimes I get mail in my mailbox that is supposed to be delivered on another street.

That never happened until about 3 years ago. And there is no end in sight.

I think the Pony Express probably moved the mail faster than a half a mile a day lol

yet the media wants to blame the new PM for following the rules set-in-place before him

I believe the retirement system is the standard government retirement. they don’t have their own. you would have to cut the feds, Good luck with that.

they do not need to raise prices, they need to be better managed which would reduce the need for a price rise.

I had issues with my email at a PO Box at a postal plant, I mailed myself a letter at their mail counter in the plant, it had to go from the counter to the box section of the same office (10 feet away), it took seven days.

they didn’t do anything when I complained.

The best you can hope for these days is having someone tell you what they think you want to hear just to get you out of their face or off the phone. Not just USPS. Any outfit.
