US priests urge Synod to issue clear affirmation of Church teaching on marriage

A growing number of Catholic priests in the US have signed a statement urging the Synod of Bishops to “make a clear and firm proclamation of the Church’s unchanging moral teaching” on marriage.

Following the example set by priests in England and Wales, a small group of priests has organized a campaign to urge a clear re-statement of Church teaching, “so that confusion may be removed.” In a brief, four-paragraph statement, they pledge their own “unwavering fidelity” to the Church’s teaching.

Father Jerry Pokorsky, a priest of the Arlington, Virginia diocese, reports that in less than a week nearly 400 priests have added their names to the statement. He added that he had no intention of founding a movement or acting as spokesman for other priests, but that the statement—which is now circulating on the internet – should stand by itself.

Praise God for this one! And may a similar effort come forth from all nations as the Holy Spirit moves to defend and sanctify the Church.
 
It’s a sad state of affairs that this is needed at all, but I hope from every country in the world come calls for the synod to re-affirm what the church has always taught.

To be fair I think this is more driven by mass media speculation (from both sides of the marriage issue) than the reality of what the Synod is likely to pronounce…
 
This is great. I am thrilled to see the Church working in such a vibrant way. The Bishops look at issues with a theological eye and try to address every nuance. And that’s great - for Bishops. But the “boots on the ground” - the parish priests - know we ALSO need clear, unambiguous, teaching documents. Hurray for both!
 
I’m a little disappointed so far, because I only know 2 priests who signed, hopefully that number goes up significantly.

What confusion? The Catechism is very clear on marriage. It seems like the more that is written about Church doctrine, the more “confusion” results, making necessary more writing. 🤷

Father Daniel O’Mullane, of the Paterson, New Jersey diocese, has begun recruiting volunteers who will call priests in their own dioceses, encouraging them to sign the statement of support for Church teaching. He hopes to organize phone calls to all Catholic priests in the US, and asks volunteers to contact him at familysynod@gmail.com.

I wonder though if people will listen to our defense of ourselves. The LGBT “rights” movement has seemed pretty willing to be ignorant of authentic Catholic teaching about homosexuality and marriage, choosing to cherry-pick what they think we believe despite Church teaching being very clear and readily available to them.

This thread is talking about urging Synod Fathers to uphold the Church’s teaching, not to go with heresy of letting gay people in mortal sin to receive Holy Communion. This has nothing to do with the gay community listen to us or not. This is to do with the faithful priests who follow Christ’s teaching expressing their loyalty to the Lord.

I agree. It’s not only sad and rather unbelievable, but a great sense of distrust and confusion is evident in the Catholic world at this moment.

Given the interim report, (which was revised in the final) we do have much to be concerned with. That and the failed 2/3 majority vote of issues which will still be debated in the upcoming session which are of major import.
 
I also hope priests in every country will do the same - to express their loyalty to Christ’s teaching and urge the coming Synod to stand on truth. It is not only sad but ridiculous that faithful Catholics even need to beg our own Church to stick to Christ’s teaching, but it is necessary given the current chaos situation.

It is everyone’s responsibility to pass the petition website link to every priest we know.
I remember a saying says that there are three kind or people, those who do not know what is happening, those who watch what is happening, and those who make it happen. I think it is critical for us to be the Catholic who make it happen. When we face the Lord in our personal judgment, he may ask what have we done in this current critical situation to defend our faith.

Whether a priest sign the petition or not is up to him. Whether we pass the information, make sure he knows it, and encourage him is up to us.

I don’t think it is a bad idea to approach your parish priests, but what if they get inundated with duplicate, triplicate requests? Is there any way to control that or to know if they have it under review? That would be really annoying on their end, right. I am fine with sending it and leaving it up to them, but, as I say, what if 70 other people do it too?
