By a 56-41 vote, the US Senate defeated an amendment to legislation that would have upheld the conscience rights of health care workers and institutions that do not wish to participate in abortion. Sixteen of the nation’s 25 Catholic senators voted against the amendment.

I perused the threads, didn't see this one. It was written April 6, so I dont know what you all think, or if this got by us.

Basically - Catholics will now be forced to perform an evil that is against their rights to practice their religion without state interference.

Anyone keeping a tally of how many rights we are losing?
How many taxes will be enforced?

Well - the defeat of an amendment that would increase protection of a right does not mean that the right has now ceased to exist - merely that it lacks the fullest possible defense.

All the same - every day that these Catholic senators go unexcommunicated is another day that I grow in my conviction that, though the bishops as a whole are infallible, bishops taken individually are about as reliable as a deadbeat dad who’s late on his child support checks.

Dear Woobager. You hit the nail right on the head. God bless.

It is time to vote the Democrats out of office next election. Too bad we can’t do the same with some bishops.

So I guess that makes the Church the most useless and pathetic institution in the world, right? Because we’re all sinners!

If we’re all equally sinners, then the Church can hardly be more useless or ineffective than the rest of the sinners. 😉

However, I didn’t say that. The Church, as Sacrosanctum Concilium attests, most efficaciously works to save the world through the Mass. That gives us an edge. Our infallibility on issues of faith and morals? Edge number two.

The bishops? Not so much. Some are good, some are awful, and most are mediocre. That’s hardly surprising, given that they’re human, but they do not inspire confidence in them, collectively or individually. I certainly wouldn’t trust that a teaching is Church teaching just because a bishop told me so, because I’ve had more than one bishop teach me things that just ain’t so!

For instance, in the words of my old archbishop, the Most Reverend John Roach: “Jesus Christ is our most undemanding friend.” headdesk

There seems to be a controversy with American Bishops surrounding the “withholding communion to pro choice legislators” but I guess that’s a topic for another thread. I just read a commentary that disagrees with the “withholding, or excommunicating” legislators for fear of politicizing the Eucharist. But the article was published in “America” (a **Jesuit **magazine) which I think speaks for itself.

The Vatican [if i remember correctly] said to excommunicate em.

The problem with Bishops - is their lack of obedience to the Vatican.

This is really true, and unfortunately has been true for a very very long time. I do agree with wowbagger in that we have a mix of bishops, some excellent, some not.
On the upside, I do believe there were more bishops that recently condemmed the actions of ND than they have ever spoken out about any issue. Guess that might mean, we’re moving in the right direction.
