Culminating years of frustration with the performance and behavior of the

United Nations, the House voted Friday to slash U.S. contributions to the world body if it does not substantially change the way it operates.

The 221-184 vote, which came despite a Bush administration warning that such a move could actually sabotage reform efforts, was a strong signal from Congress that a policy of persuasion wasn’t enough to straighten out the U.N.

“We have had enough waivers, enough resolutions, enough statements,” said House International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, R-Ill., the author of the legislation. “It’s time we had some teeth in reform.”

The legislation would withhold half of U.S. dues to the U.N.'s general budget if the organization did not meet a list of demands for change. Failure to comply would also result in U.S. refusal to support expanded and new peacekeeping missions. The bill’s prospects in the Senate are uncertain.

AWESOME!!!

I’m 100% behind the US getting out of the UN and then getting the UN out of the US.

Interesting but, if the US can’t “Straighten Out” the UN then who can “Straighten Out” the US.

p.s. Considering how much the States already owes the UN in unpaid dues I would be surprised if slashing everything from nothing would make much difference.

Over 40% of the funding for the UN comes from Japan and the USA. There has been talk in Japan of cutting back. If the two of us do, Canada, Sweden, France, Syria and other insignificant countries which use the UN to trash the USA will have to find another place to do it.

And you wonder why everyone hates us? Could such xenophobic arrogance be a contributing factor? Could very well be.

I agree 100%. At least this way it would be out in the open.

If everyone hated us we wouldn’t be constantly asked to fund the world’s various disaster relief programs nor would millions of people get in line to immigrate here either legally or illegally. Odd in my mind we’re so hated yet so many desire to be as free and prosperous as we are.

Hated? LOL!!!

I do not like the UN.Their help they offer has nooses attached:nope:

Hi guys!

The U.N. ceased being a useful entity a long time ago. It can no longer effect any change for good any more because it is hampered by its own beaurocracy. I’m not especially upset that my tax dollars will no longer go to supporting this model of inefficiency.

I only pray that the UN crashes and burns soon. It’s an evil organization that does much more harm than good.

As for the previously mentioned countries being ‘insignificant’…if they were not economically and militarily inferior, they wouldn’t be joining the EU to compete with US. Thats not to say that they amount to nothing, just that they don’t have the military or economic clout to matter much as individual countries.

The U.N. served a purpose during the Cold War as it kept serious enemies where we could monitor them. As you know, Alger Hiss (one of the many Soviet agents in the Truman nd Roosevelt administrations) was the Secretary General of the committee which organized the U.N. He also helped draft the U.N. charter. Either the U.N. must be seriously reformed or is has to go.

Some good news from Asia Times today:

The prospects of UN reform have unexpectedly taken a new momentum, with the US administration saying it will support the addition of two new permanent members to the UN Security Council (UNSC). According to a senior official in the George W Bush administration, of the two new members Washington will back, one will be Japan and the other will be from the developing world - either Brazil or India, with the prospects of India considerably higher, given the criterion of selection.

Japan certainly deserves it. India needs it as it is threatened on the west by Islamic states and to the north and east by China (the PRC is building ports in both Burma and Pakistan. With Maoists operating in Nepal, India is surrounded by hostile and potentially hostile forces).

I am right behind you on this one. Let’s see if this really goes through.

Wow, how do you express a standing ovation on a forum? It is about time we stopped funding the biggest threat to our way of life (followed closely by the liberals in our own country) there is today. The UN would be a joke if it wasn’t so destructive. How many wars have there been during the reign of this wonderful "peacekeeping " body? How many crimes have they overlooked? How many crimes have they perpetrated? How many not-so-subtle (to those of us who pay attention) attacks have they made our way of life? I wish the U.N. a richly deserved and long overdue demise.

And you wonder why everyone hates us?
The only place everyone hates us is in the left-wing media that cares nothing about the truth, the country, or the safety of our soldiers. All they care about is getting their liberal cohorts back in power to finish the destruction of our way of life they have been engaged in since the 60’s.
