According to the San Diego Tribune:
  • University of San Diego decision rescinding a prestigious position to a Catholic feminist theologian has thrust it smack in the middle of a national debate over academic freedom versus adherence to church teachings.
Faculty and Roman Catholics are divided over USD’s decision to withdraw the appointment of Rosemary Radford Ruether to an endowed chair. At issue is Ruether’s position on the board of directors for Catholics for Choice, an abortion rights organization.

Two national women’s religious groups have sponsored a petition with more than 2,000 signatures demanding that she be allowed to assume the post.

USD is standing by its decision.*

I’m proud of USD’s decision. A counter-petition has been launched in support of USD’s rescindment of the job offer. If you want to add your voice to this petition and support Pope Benedict in his request that Catholic schools uphold Catholic teachings - the petition is located at brianmcdaniel.org/?page_id=662.

I think this is such a great step toward Catholic universities defending the faith. What do you all think?

Thanks so much! I will remember that for next time.

Stephanie

She says she worries about what this will do to academic freedom. I wonder should feel the same way if David Duke was appointed to the chair of a historically Black College?

And of course she invokes the usual right wing cabal pressuring the school mantra. The church’s teaching on abortion could not be clearer. She firmly rejects that teaching It doesn’t take a right wing cabal to see that she has no business being employed by Catholic University

After reading the article, I made an online donation to USD and told them why. In addition to refusing Ruether a chair, I want them to know the vast majority of Catholics are not divided on this issue. The appointment of Ruether to any position in any Catholic university needs to be stopped. There are plenty of secular university positions open, and I imagine her stock will go considerably in the next few days. Or she can stay in Claremont, also known as Berkeley South.

USD does have some nutball ideas, but they’re on the right side of this.

In light of the backlash to the action by activist faculty members, I hope many people pen their support to Provost Sullivan.

Praise God. Lets hope all Catholic Universities have the courage to teach true Catholicism.

Ruether is a real piece of work. Her worldview and beliefs are fundamentally incompatible with catholicism. In all intellectual honesty, she should admit that she isn’t catholic but rather eastern / new age mysticism. The only REAL reason she doesn’t do so is that there isn’t a wide network of new age universities and foundations with endowed chairs.

Read all about her in the book “Ungodly Rage.”

Thank you for the link to the petition site. I have signed it. :yup:

Yesterday, I forwarded the petition to everyone in my address book. As of last evening, 15 had added their names to it.

If each of us could get 10 folks we know to do the same we’d have 40 not 4 thousand on the petition.👍

Just because one has it on paper, does not mean they have it in the head.

She is probably very knowledgeable and quite a scholar. The question is not her academic credentials ,the question is the fact that she rejects core Catholic doctrines. Given that why would anybody expect her to get a chair at Catholic University?

As I said before what if David Duke said sterling academic credentials. Should he be given a chair and historically black college?

Good for USD.👍

Yet the left has no qualms about censoring those who are not in lockstep with them. If fact, they consider that academic freedom since only their viewpoint is allowed.

In fact USD should go further, any faculty that protests this decision should be sanctioned (including firings if possible).

USD is not a public institution. It is a Catholic institution and has the right and obligation to promote that viewpoint.

From the article:
During a visit in April to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Pope Benedict XVI advised Catholic college educators not to allow scholarly pursuits to depart from Catholic doctrine.
Any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the church would obstruct or even betray the university’s identity and mission,” he said.

From the article:
Sadly, the vast majority of our Catholic universities are in the same boat. I wish there were more folks who would visit their Catholic college campuses–take student tours–they’re really quite revealing. The challenge then becomes not to become demoralized, but energized to write and call the deans and presidents, as well as the alumni offices, and let them know what you think.

Yeah. Apparently she’s a theologian, has written more than 40 books and has more than a dozen doctorates - what would she know

😃
As noted by others, my disparaging comment is not based on her intelligence or credentials. I’m sure her education far exceeds mine. My contempt is for her intellectual dishonesty in claiming to be a ‘catholic’ theologian while holding and teaching concepts fundamentally incompatible with catholicism.

Why not call a spade a spade?

😃
Yeah right! A PhD is not a general indicator of intelligence. Did you know that she is a signatory to the 9/11 Truth Statement?

From their website
“NEW YORK CITY, NY (Oct. 26, 2004) - An alliance of 100 prominent Americans and 40 family members of those killed on 9/11 today announced the release of the 911 Truth Statement, a call for immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur…”
