Use NFP: It Doesn't Work

Nope. If I was diabetic I would not live in fear of candy either.

God designed me to be fertile on somedays and infertile the rest. He designed a way to tell when those times are. We simply watched the signs.

Many people benefit from counseling, there are sadly people who have had their ideas of love and marriage and relationships formed by the media, secular society or by broken marriages of their parents. They have never learned by example HOW to have a successful marriage, so, they need a professional to assist.
lol No, I know what sex is for and secular society isn’t the major influence on my idea of sex and marriage and I’m still scared shirtless. It is very possible to have a good understanding of what something is for and still be scared of it, ever visit the dentist?

All I am saying is that NFP effectiveness increases over time because people have gotten burned in the past and know exactly what happens when you take risks. other contraceptive methods just tend to be more “forgiving”.

What do you mean by “gotten burned” - do you consider a child getting “burned”

Also a bit confused about the forgiving part - condoms break. I got pregnant the first time when I missed ONE pill from my BCPs (was sick and just forgot to take the thing), Diaphrams get holes in them and can slip out of place - not sure what “forgiving” form of ABC you are thinking about…

If a condom breaks or a diaphram slips it doesn’t matter unless the woman is in the fertile part of her cycle. When you make a mistake with NFP you are having unprotected sex at the exact moment when the woman is most fertile. Most NFP instructors point this out during class when they talk about cheating. Other methods are just easier to cheat on or use incorrectly and still not get an unexpected pregnancy. That is why they are more forgiving and the success rate stays the same over time. As people learn they can not cheat on NFP unless they want a baby they learn respect and the success rate goes up.

There have been a number of medical studies conducted on the NFP efficacy rate and user satisfaction and they all point to success. In fact, when done correctly with 100% compliance, NFP is 98% effective – the same efficacy as using birth control pills.

As I continue to read these posts I see a number of questions and issues are raised which are completely unrelated to NFP. While the comments are definitely interesting and educational, it appears that a lot of people claim that NFP is unreliable because they did not comply with the method. Of course, if you have sex during your fertile days you risk conceiving. This doesn’t mean the method itself is unreliable.
It also seems that a lot of individuals who have practiced NFP are relying on the Symptothermal Method (with cervical mucus observation) which is NOT the most effective means of NFP. This method is great if you are trying to get pregnant, but less than ideal if you are trying to avoid or time pregnancy.
I still believe one’s success rate for any practice/task comes down to the method and tools one uses. My husband and I swear by our method, using a Lady-Comp to indicate my fertile days and then abstaining on those days. All I can say is that this has given us a deeper insight and more confidence in our family planning and reduces our level of stress around the practice.

I thought you meant that when using NFP instead of birth control that there was something well- seeming “spitually” or unknown that made you hate it. As much as I hate to admit I’m wrong, some of these posts have deffinately shown me that no doctors, (including those that are reccomended by the Pope Paul Institute) really want to “go for it” and try to find the root problem for some women (such as myself) who have some serious problems as far as menstration- I’m glad you let me know about what your ex went through, because the last “bright” idea they had (besides just birth control) was to do a meyomectamy which could have resulted in loosing parts of me if all didn’t go correctly. They wanted to see if this would “fix the problem”. I feel very badly for the both of you - something which she had little or no control was made worse by a doctor. I thank God my parents stepped in and told me to try to bear up when I had a period lasting 8 months which I had to have transfusions during. They wanted to go in and do the myomectmy then - which I’ve since found when done with bleeding that is already severe or almost sever can cost a woman her ability to get pregnant. I’m saying a prayer for her and you.
God Bless

Hi Annie,

Your experience sounds absolutely horrific. I am sorry you went through this. I have a close friend who suffers from PCOS. Not quite as bad as your condition, but close enough. What was the final solution for you? How did you manage your condition?

Regards,
Zelda
