Hi all,

I recently purchased a 1962 Roman Missal from Baronius Press. I’m very happy I did, since I had no idea how much extra content it contained. I would highly recommend any Catholic buy this (even if you attend the OF) for this reason. Far better than any OF missal I have had!

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify exactly how to use it (I’m fairly new to the EF).

How do I know which readings/propers are used on days that do not have a Saint’s feast day, and do not fall in Advent or Lent?

For instance, September 4,6,7 are blank on the calendar, and do not fall in Lent or Advent. How do I know which prayers will be used at mass, or which readings I can read on my own if I do not attend mass on those days?

Generally, on feria days, the Mass of the preceding Sunday in said. If you are interested in all of the particulars, an ordo (yearly calendar) is a great investment. Another source you can use is tlm-md.blogspot.com/. They print information for the next day’s Mass options. Hope is helps.

The information is usually posted in my church’s weekly bulletin in the listed schedule for the upcoming week. I’ve gotten in the habit of checking the bulletin and marking my missal accordingly for the following Sunday. If I forget to pick up a bulletin or misplace it, my church posts the bulletins online so I can find it there.

Here is an online liturgical calendar listing with all of the days for 2015. Sundays are in bold.

This is correct. Also, I believe the priest has, in some cases, discretion as to which type of Mass he will say during ferial days, such as electing to say a special Mass devoted to a particular saint, the souls in purgatory, etc.

The Missal is easy to use when you get used to it.

You’ll need to place a ribbon in the Ordinary of the Mass (this never changes).

You’ll also need to place a ribbon in the Prefaces section.

Lastly, you’ll need to place a ribbon in the propers for the day. The easiest way to find out about feast days etc is to get a Traditional Catholic calendar or an Ordo.

If you can, ask your priest to set the Missal for you. He’ll be happy to do so.

If you’re in the UK, you should contact the Latin Mass Society and they’ll be happy to help.
