VA Governor Signs Universal Background Checks, Gun Rationing Bill

Governor Ralph Northam (D) signed legislation Saturday creating universal background checks in Virginia and limiting law-abiding Virginians to one handgun purchase per month.

Northam’s office announced his signature on Senate Bill 70 / House Bill 2, creating the universal checks and thereby outlawing private gun sales.

He signed Senate Bill 69 / House Bill 812 resurrecting Virginia’s “one-handgun-a-month rule to help curtail stockpiling of firearms and trafficking.”

Northam used a tweet to refer to these gun controls as “commonsense gun safety measures,” but he did not mention that they would not have prevented the May 31, 2019 Virginia Beach shooting that he used as an impetus for gun control.

He also signed other controls into law, including requirements that gun owners report stolen firearms within 48 hours of the theft or face “civil penalty.” This puts the onus for a gun theft on the gun owner, rather than the individual who stole the firearm.

Democrats won control of Virginia’s legislature in November 2019 and, just days after their victory, Northam made clear there would be a war on guns. . . .

Yesterday (Good Friday) Northam signed a bill expanding abortion against Virginians.

As a gun-owner myself, I fully support universal background checks. And of course I’d immediately report a stolen weapon – I want that on record asap, in case it’s used in a crime. Not reporting a stolen weapon is not very smart.

puer.dei . . .
Not reporting a stolen weapon is not very smart.
The trouble with that is, if you are unaware it was stolen.

Now YOU are also potentially the criminal.

The problem with that is, there are other people too. Not just you. They have differing views and good reasons why this “infringing” upon American citizens is more bad “law”.

As a gun owner I feel it is my responsibility to know where that gun is at all times. And I feel it is my responsibility to make a report if it is stolen.

I fully support closing the loophole of Private Sales as well.

Limiting purchases to 1 gun a month is ridiculous though. If a buyer clears the background check, what difference does it make if he or she buys one gun or 3 ?

It is your responsibility. And we have already had people charged for this WITHOUT new laws.

Sales between law-abiding citizens are not Governments business.

I am not in favor of a dad becoming a felon because he gets his son his first shotgun (unless he reports it to Government). Nor any other lawful gun transaction.

I am disappointed you are.

Maybe I have a handle on what are reasonable firearm restrictions and know about safe storage and handling of guns? Maybe.

Infringing? That standard has been changing since it was enacted.

That’s not a sale – it is a gift. We have folks buying 15 or 20 handguns at a time and moving them to sell illegally out of state in the inner city. One gun purchase a month is enough.

Another problem with this is SELECTIVE enforcement of this!

Especially with Government who has little or often no accountability.

Your solution?

More Government.

No charges after Isabella Co. sheriff accidentally leaves gun at school

SHEPHERD, Mich. — Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against a county sheriff who accidentally left a loaded service weapon in a Michigan school gym locker room.

The Mecosta County prosecutor’s office recently made the determination after being asked to review the case by the Michigan attorney general’s office. Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main apologized after leaving his backup gun at Shepherd Middle School last month, calling his mistake inexcusable. . . .

. . . Main said he believed the gun was in his bag, but a sixth grader later found it and told a teacher.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports the gun was found on a bathroom stall toilet paper holder.
Then after the prosecutor calling this mistake “inexcusable” . . . . they excused him.

Nepperhan thinking HE should make the determination for others just what THEY need . . . .
One gun purchase a month is enough.

All firearms laws are infringements.
Nope. Everyone believes in some level of gun control and gun laws. Otherwise, we would have kids with pistols in their lunch boxes.

The hard part comes in dealing with the extent of laws. Firearm laws were MORE restrictive in the 19th century and on the frontier.

Absolute fantasy. We have been over that before.

Don’t fall for it Nepperham.

I think the VA legislature made the determination. I happen to agree with the thought.

You have any reasoning on why someone might need to buy more than one gun a month or you just don’t like the idea emotionally?

If you REALLY think this way . . .

Go ahead and tell everyone here how
you support guns being given away without involving Government Nepperham.

Now is your chance.

If you have tens of thousands of dollars laying around to spend on it you won’t hear me object.
You would if you were an air traveler. You know how close the air patterns are to my home? A Russian manpad costs $2,000 on the black market. Enjoy your flight.
