From the ANSA news agency:
Rome, December 19 - One of Rome’s oldest and most beautiful churches, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major), has been damaged by a vandal.

The vandal climbed over two railings and attacked the basilica’s bronze doors with a rock, knocking off six saintly badges and “seriously” damaging a bas-relief portrayal of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, church sources said on Monday.

Dislike!

One of the fences was 6 metres tall?? that’s a 20 foot fence! I can only assume that the reason for his homelessness must be some mental instability…I hope they give him the help he needs. At least it doesn’t mention it being irreversible damage.:o

I was there in May, and it is beutiful. May God have mercy on the person who did this.

I wonder why he did this? Was he deranged or insane? Was he simply an extremely anti-Catholic bigot? Was he drunk or on drugs? Or maybe he was influenced by the devil or demons somehow? Regardless of the reason for him doing this, I do hope and pray that this is brought to justice.

I agree with that as well.

Sounds like some seriously tormented, mentally unstable individual. Hopefully, if that IS the case, this person can get the help they so desperatyely need once justice is done. I will be praying for this.
Through the prayers of the Mother Of God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Indeed.

Thankfully, the door was not an ancient work of art. It was commissioned by Pope Pius XII and created by the artist Lodovico Pogliaghi in 1949.

Still, its distressing that someone would go to such lengths to damage the church door.

Here is a photo showing the worst of the damage:
