Does anyone know about Varsity Spirit cheerleading camps? My 17-yr-old daughter just started cheerleading and she’s scheduled to go to one of these camps later this month with the cheerleaders from her high school.

It’s just where the girls go (all girls when I was in school) and cheer their little heads off for a few days. I personally wasn’t a cheerleader, but my friends were and they went to these camps every summer. But it’s been 11 years since high school, so I don’t know what they do now. If it’s anything like what we had, it’s just fun times.

It’s been quite some time since I attended one of those but it was just a camp to learn more routines. We were kept BUSY! You wake up at the crack of dawn to eat and then the day is filled with learning cheers, learning stunts, meeting other teams. You can go to different “stations” to work on those areas that you personally need work on…mine was back hand spring. You learned how to get the crowd going. There were spirit batons to win. (like if you mastered a cheer the best, or got the stunts down right or learned a dance routine the best). It was fun competitiveness. Our team learned alot of new things to incorporate into our routines back at home. Some that were new, we put in our routine for competition and won 1st place.
The coaches from the camp evaluate you and the top girls that could master certain tasks were placed on the All American team and had a chance to march in the Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. A girl from our team made it. Then they had our coaches learn a cheer and they had to perform it on the last night. It was really fun.

As I said, it’s been quite some time since I have attended (18yrs!!!) but we were supervised by our coach and two moms (there were only ten of us). Although we stayed up and giggled alot, we were so exhausted by the end of the day that we didn’t have time to get into any mischief. I learned alot and it was a positive experience. It was something my very strict parents let me attend and it was a safe environment. It does cost alot though. We had to do fund raisers to pay for the camp. Then we had to buy matching outfits for the 5 days we were there. You also have to have matching shoes. So that’s something to consider.
Hope this helps even though it’s outdated!

Thanks for the information. I am kind of concerned about them picking my daughter up and tossing her (she’s light weight)–actually, not so much with them tossing her as with them catching her. Then, too, they’ll be staying at the Illinois State University campus in Normal over a week-end. I hope she’ll be able to attend Mass. I know the university has a Neuman Center.

I too was the light weight one and I learned to do the middle (I think they are called the Russian)splits. They always needed someone in the front doing them. We were not allowed to do basket tosses though so I understand your concern.

Have you considered calling her coach and just expressing some concerns you have and making sure the coach knows that it is non-negotiable that she goes to Mass? You can look up Mass times and I am sure they have an early morning Mass. Or will she get home in time for an evening Mass on Sunday??
