In his address, Francis cited Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. He also mentioned Native Americans. He said no to fundamentalism, yes to respect for religious freedom. Advocating cooperation for the common good at a time of “disturbing social and political situation of the world today situation of the world,” he reiterated the dangers to the family, “perhaps as never before”. He called for the abolition of the death penalty, and an end to the blood-soaked arms trade.
