The topic at hand is the temptation of wealth to sin. So I am not really cherry picking, I am simply addressing the topic at hand.
the filthy rich is in a lot less temptation to sin compared to those living in slum areas. i believe they are even less tempted than us in the middle class. like you wont catch them downloading songs & movies illegally. you wont catch them car washing their toddlers.
The risks of extreme wealth exist only for the rich and that is why we are examining them.
what exactly are the risks? hmmm let me see…they can afford high class prostitutes. they can be more arrogant. anything else?

Yeah, it takes a while to prudently give away $50 billion dollars. And it is sooo hard to do when you own a company that just pumps cash into your bank account at the rate of billions a year. (Poor Bill.) He did get knocked down a couple of notches in the latest Fortune 500 list.
oh try to think more creatively than that. if he is really willing to give away everything exept for 10 million dollars, he could do it in less than a years time. its a lot easier to dispose money than to make it. the point remains that he is still filthy rich and will remain so for many more years to come.

All we know is his net worth, which says nothing about his earnings or contributions. So we just don’t know, do we?

earnings can be easily diverted to existing charities or projects.

theres no excuse. bill gates is a good guy, but lets face it…he is only giving away loose change. better than nothing!!! 😃

think about a certain jesus’ parable

earnings can be easily diverted to existing charities or projects.
Seriously agno, you are just being obstinate. All you have to do is google. Gates has said repeatedly that his wealth will be distributed, via his foundation, over the course of 50-100 years.

*ROME, Italy (AP) – A Vatican official has listed drugs, pollution and genetic manipulations as well as social and economic injustices as new areas of sinful behavior.

Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published on Sunday by the Vatican’s daily newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, that known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole.*

How on earth does genetic manipulations damages society as a whole?

Is this teaching Ex-cathedra?
Pollution, the church is coming up with that NOW? They want to go green in the Vatican. People are losing their jobs, no jobs no money, do you think? Just asking.

God Bless

Not for nothing but the Vatican and the Catholic Church in general are what I would describe as “filthy rich”, is this an example of “do as I say not as I do”?

Did you not read the part about Vatican officials contributing to the article? Did you fail to read the part about it being posted in the Vatican newspaper?
Then why not cite the Vatican newspaper?

Until you cite a reliable source, why should anyone take you seriously?

Mostly because the new one is not up yet. See, it is Sunday’s edition, but they only the one for March 5 posted right now. And maybe because me bringing it up might spark some people to maybe looking at it for themselves. Those that don’t, I don’t take them very seriously.

Actually, I suspect it is much more complicated than you think it is. Most of Bill Gate’s fortune is tied up in the stock of Microsoft. Now, if Bill Gates was to try and liquidate his holdings all at once, the share price would plummet and he would loose most of the wealth he is trying to use to do good. Likewise, you don’t want to set up an endowment that consists of a single stock for the reason that a single stock is way to volatile. So moving his fortune could take quite some time.

well now, that makes sense. anyway i noticed that i couldnt really see where the vatican says that being filthy rich is a mortal sin. we were arguing for nothing. 😃

Italian version. Google translates it thus:
Speaking with the regent of Penitentiary at the end of Corsican for confessors
The new forms
Of social sin
Code:
     Nicola Gori

Genetic manipulations, environmental pollution, social inequality, social injustice untenable: that is the new forms of sin affacciatesi the horizon of humanity, almost as a corollary dell'inarrestabile process of globalization. A new challenge for a department, the Apostolic Penitentiary, which is struggling to reassert its role even in an era where there is no perception of the same sin. Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, bishop of regent Penitentiary, he speaks in this interview granted to "L'Osservatore Romano", following the conclusion of the Corsican for confessors.

The Apostolic Penitentiary seems a mysterious object for the public but also for most of the faithful.

As he said, unfortunately, has reflected in reality. Although currently the oldest body of the Roman Curia - after the abolition of Dataria, occurred in 1967 and Stationery, which took place in 1973 - is little known even by big part of the clergy. The reason probably lies in the fact that its activities rifugge visibility from that which is more linked to the tasks of other departments. The Apostolic Penitentiary, including departments of the Roman Curia, in fact, is the one that plays in ever direct a proper spiritual, more in keeping with the fundamental mission of the Church, consisting of the salus animarum. It is the universal and exclusive body of the Pope in the field of internal forum. It uses the internal forum not only for the sins, the complaints and irregularities, but generally hidden for situations such as dispensations, sanazioni, endorsements acts void resulting from circumstances occult. See also, and solves the cases of conscience that are proposed. Addresses doubts regarding moral or legal when it comes to hidden or circumstances of individual facts.

What is the value of your answers?

This is a proper value authoritative - as appropriate, or liberating precettivo - only for real and unique circumstances that are proposed and not for the other cases, but that the other may extend those answers as prudential criteria. That is the doctrinal and disciplinary guidelines included in the same solutions can be applied with caution by the priest who has provided to the appeal, by analogy, in a broader context, but in no case is it possible to disclose those answers.

He is currently sense a body like the Penitentiary since that seems to create problems in ecumenical?

I find it difficult to grasp the reasons and grounds objectives of this alleged hardship that would Penitentiary on ecumenism. If you want to refer to error historiographical about forgiveness, which since the Renaissance has not facilitated the correct some discussion ecumenical enough to deal with the recent and full documentation unexpected emergence scholars who are quite honestly function of this department, considered the real "source of grace", without any interest.

Care for the sin part from a sensitivity to the needs of modern society or moves on the basis of references of the time spent?

The reference is always the breach of the covenant with God and with our brothers and social consequences of sin. If yesterday was a sin rather individualistic dimension, today it has a value, has a resonance, as well as individual, particularly social because of the great phenomenon of globalization. Indeed, attention to sin is more urgent today as yesterday, for his reflections that are broader and more destructive.

continued…
Code:
      The Penitentiary still serves?
Without doubt. In an era characterized by the image and advertising, where everything becomes public, a department, as the Apostolic Penitentiary, attentive to the inner world in its most delicate side and less visible, I think, within the framework of the structured life of the Church , is a very valuable tool.
Code:
What matters most attract your attention?
There are those crimes which, because of their seriousness, the Holy See has given absolution: the acquittal of his accomplice in sin against the Sixth Commandment (canon 1378); the sacrilegious desecration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist (canon 1367 ), the direct violation of the sacramental seal (canon 1388, 1); dispensed by irregularities recipiendos Ordines contracted for procured abortion (canon 1041, 4); dispensed by irregularities exercendos Ordines (canon 1044 1).
Code:
How does the wonder that the public trial in front of so many situations of sin and scandal in the Church?
One can not underestimate the objective gravity of a series of phenomena that have been reported recently and that bring with them the implications of the fragility of human and institutional Church, in this regard, however, one can not help but see how it concerned the serious infertole damage, has responded and continues to respond with strict actions and initiatives to protect the image of the Church itself and for the good of God’s people. However, we must also condemn the emphasis given by their media, which, as part of a mondanizzazione, cast discredit on the Church.
Code:
Sometimes the indulgence of the Church and Christian forgiveness are not understood by people. Why in your opinion?
Today it seems that penance be seized as an opening of oneself to the solution of problems that require attention within that radius social, where it expresses its existence, offering its own contribution of clarification, support those in difficulty. Penance, therefore, today is cultivated mainly in the social dimension, since social relations were complicated and weakened at the same time as a result of globalisation.
Code:
What are the new sins in your opinion?
There are several areas in which today feel sinful attitudes towards individual rights and social issues. First, the area of bioethics within which we can not fail to denounce violations of certain fundamental rights of human nature through experiments, genetic manipulation, whose outcome is difficult to discern and control. Another area, proper social, is the area of drugs, through which weakens the dark psyche and intelligence, leaving many young people outside the Church. Even the area of social and economic inequality: in which the poor are getting poorer and the rich growing richer, fuelling an unsustainable social injustice, the area of ecology, which is now a major concern.
Code:
The frequent use of indulgences fails to promote a magical mentality towards guilt and punishment?
To avoid falling into such a dangerous and distorted vision, I think first of all that it is absolutely necessary to know and understand the right doctrine of the practice of indulgences, understood by the Church as a significant expression of the mercy of God who comes to meet his children to help them meet penalties due to their sins “but also and above all to lead to greater fervor of charity”. The Church has moved primarily by the desire to educate, rather than with the repetition of formulas and practices, the spirit of prayer and penance and to the theological virtues. The reform of the Servant of God Paul VI implemented with the Apostolic Constitution Indulgentiarum Doctrina of 1 January 1967, eliminates, to some extent, as the faithful could lead to a mentality magic. This doctrine clearly exposes the theological assumptions of indulgences, is the solidarity that exists between men in Adam and Christ, the communion of saints, the treasure of the Church, consisting in expiation and the merits of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints , which are made available to the faithful. The indulgences, in fact - is stressed - may not be purchased without a sincere conversion and without union with God, plus the completion of the works required.
Code:
She does not believe that the conditions for obtaining the indulgence are mild?
If all the conditions usually imposed - sacramental confession not over 15 or 20 days before or after, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Pope - you believe that to capture the indulgence is required degree of purity and eminent signs of burning love , whose success remains difficult to our fragility, then I would not established that what is precisely to minimize.
Code:
There are sins that you can not perform?
The Penitentiary is the Pope’s longa manus in the potestas clavium. Therefore, to realize the role that keeps awarded in the internal forum, has all the powers necessary, with the exception of those which the Pope has expressly declared the cardinal of wanting penitenziere reserving for itself. It can consequently make, in the internal forum, all acts of competence of the remaining departments of the Roman Curia.
Code:
Sull'aborto is the widespread feeling that the Church does not take into account the plight of women.
It seems to me that such a concern does not take into account any attitude which manifests the Church constantly in safeguarding and protecting the rights and dignity of women. Many, in fact, are the initiatives that Catholic organizations and movements ecclesial hard courageous and intelligent, do not cease to promote, in order to counter the current cultural and social trends against women, helping, effectively unmarried mothers, striving for the education of their children made for the world and lack even facilitating adoption.
It is presented as defining new social sins.

Gates is a poor example for “rich and not doing good for others”. He is filthy rich, but he has spent billions on helping the poor. Years ago I read an interview with him where he stated that his father told him that it would be immoral for him to die and leave so much money to heirs, that he had better be giving it away to humanitarian causes and leave very little to heirs to squander.

You can read in this Fortune 500 article:

“Bill and Melinda have said that almost all their fortune will go to charity, and right now they still have an estimated net worth of $50 billion.”

I don’t know if you have noticed, but every time I turn around I find Gate’s foundations giving away money and doing work for the poor. They are responsible for providing child vaccinations to millions of children who otherwise wouldn’t have them.

Warren Buffet, another billionaire, donated billions to the Gate’s foundation. He is another example of what the Vatican is saying the rich SHOULD be doing.

The sin is found in those who have extreme wealth, while so much suffering exists in the world in the form of chronic poverty. When these outlandishly rich people do nothing for those in extreme need, they are indeed sinning.

Based on the teaching of JPII, I believe much of this is squarely aimed at CORPORATIONS, and the individuals who lead them.

I also recommend reading this address to the United Nations, regarding global climate change.
Global climate change will do one thing create jobs bring the economy back up… rich get richer etc. People will have money purchase “more idols” “corporations get richer!!” But I can’t stop thinking that the earth was destroyed the “first time by water”. We are also reminded of this in Holy Scripture and God said did he not? This time it will be “fire”. Our churches are closing baskets are empty, don’t you think.

God Bless

Genetic manipulations, environmental pollution, social inequality, social injustice untenable: that is the new forms of sin affacciatesi the horizon of humanity, almost as a corollary dell’inarrestabile process of globalization.
how do these translate into practice?

Genetic manipulations: a scientist working on genetic engineering?

Environmental pollution: a catholic dude dumps his garbage on the freeway?

Social inequality: racism? sexism? being filthy rich?

Social injustice: sounds pretty much the same as ‘social inequality’.

the filthy rich is in a lot less temptation to sin compared to those living in slum areas. i believe they are even less tempted than us in the middle class. like you wont catch them downloading songs & movies illegally. you wont catch them car washing their toddlers.
With respect, you seem to be confusing crime and sin. I will grant that many who are rich are less likely to commit crimes than the poor. That being said, there are a host of activities that are legal, but I would consider them sinning.
what exactly are the risks? hmmm let me see…they can afford high class prostitutes. they can be more arrogant. anything else?
Yep, how about eliminating the jobs of workers with families just so they can make the bottom line look better while at the same time pocketing a multi-million dollar bonus? Or how about moving a factory from one country to another because the other country has laxer labor and/or environmental laws.

Or how about pocketing million dollar bonuses by encouraging people to borrow more than they can afford and then selling the loans to unsuspecting third parties? Or pocketing a multi-million dollar bonus when your company just lost 100 million dollars?

To be honest, I think many sins are covered by people spouting the gospel of capitalism. In capitalism, the ends almost always are used as justification of the means. Morally, there are few things more repugnant. Materialism was one of the great sins of the 20th century and it looks like it will be one of the great sins of the 21st as well.
