In an interview author Gerald Posner admits some bias going into the book.I’m no where nears finished with the book. I have read countless history books over the past 40 years. This one is incredibly well documented.** The author may have some bias (I really don’t know)** but I have no doubt that many of the allegations are true.
“I am a non-practicing Catholic, but my DNA is Catholic, so I had a [somewhat] skeptical view of the institution, but yes, writing this book gave me a worse view. It opened my eyes, but in a way these are things I probably should have known. When you are talking about human nature and operating in the dark and money, it doesn’t matter if they are wearing the robe of a Catholic priest or not. Now that seems like common sense to me, so this history that I discovered shouldn’t have surprised me but it did.”
Over the years, I have read some sorted accounts of the history of the bank and it’s not possible to claim it is free from scandal. Especially, since the Vatican has admitted terrible problems but many false claims can be attributed to the institution - and frankly, people will believe it. That is also in some of their so-called “DNA”.
Cardinal Pell and his team identified that a lot of Vatican offices basically had off the books slush funds where they kept money from previous years that they didn’t spend, but didn’t report back up the chain that they still had. So if an office got $1m in one year, and only spent 750k, they’d keep the $250k they didn’t spend and wouldn’t tell anybody, so the next year they’d get another $1m, but really they’d have 1.25m, and so it would go.Wasn’t it Cardinal Pell who was given the assignment to clean up the bank.?
Now he has been silenced the evil doers are once again free to do their evil.

Investing in companies that were complicit in war crimes (not just before having that knowledge)
Bribes of various kinds to cover up scandals (sexual and otherwise…)

Here is a Jewish site that tries to argue against many of the unfair criticisms of the church regarding the Nazis.
I recommend watching the 2nd last video titled “Pope Pius documents 3 11”. It is a very thorough investigation with dozens of original documents.
I’m well aware that the Pope did certain things to try to save some Jews - especially those in Rome. I know some criticisms of Pius for his actions (or inactions) during that time are unfair. But I am strictly talking about financial type issues. Don’t delude yourself into believing there was no collusion with the Nazis in terms of gold transactions, etc.
