Vatican Calls for Global Authority on Economy

It does NOT contradict the concept of subsidiarity. Please read the article and notice we are talking about a global economic authority (not a global government to establish laws and rights) which, if you were using the concept of subsidiarity, would imply that a global authority is the lowest level that an effective control can be maintained.

Subsidiarity does not mean that everything is given to the people, but to the lowest level that appropriate control can be maintained. Looking at our situation now, it is clear that the “federal” level is insufficient for good of the world, thus there is a need to elevate the level. It does not say that there will be no lower level controls or that “federal” control will be absent, just that there needs to be a world economy that is not based around one country and on one currency.

God Bless.
How you can separate a global economic authority from a One World Government. There would obviously have to be a world economic law to make this run – right away subsidiarity is denied. This model would lead to a loss of economic freedom – you can’t have freedom once that is denied.

This has got to be the scariest headline I have ever seen in my life. Why does the Vatican want to put the control of the entire world into the hands of a few very wealthy and very evil men? The “common good”? Something very, very bad has happened here, and I think it is time to start praying like we have never done before. Blessed Elena Aiello, an Italian nun who was just beatified on September 14, said:

We are living in unbelieveably evil times. Remember the prophecies of Fatima, that entire nations will be annihilated.

PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!!
I agree, nothing about it seems right. This is Jesus’ Church, not a political or financial entity.

Couldn’t agree more. Fundamentalists are now wagging their fingers saying “I told you so!”

It’s actually like something straight out of a Chick publications pamphlet. This will turn a lot of Catholics off.
It didn’t turn them off in 2009 when the Pope called for the same thing, did it? His call came in the form of an encyclical, which is an official Church document.

usatoday.com/news/religion/2009-07-07-pope-encyclical_N.htm

Of particular interest is paragraph 67 of Caritas in Veritate.

People need to know the details, not just make rash judgments on what is being said here. The concept is that the current system, which is in truth a global economy that is unregulated, has caused more poverty than it has prevented. The poorest of the poor are just getting poorer and the developed countries are unwilling to help those countries in which they do not see a political or economic benefit. The concept behind the global economic authority is that the poor countries would have a voice where they currently do not. A huge caveat to the who discussion is that this global authority would be guided by Christian principles, which means that simply giving the UN control is not what is being visualized here.

I am not speaking in favor or against this concept, but everyone must recognize that this is not new and it is not against Catholic teaching when understood in proper context.

God Bless.

You can not deny the apparent imprudence of the document. I haven’t had time to read it fully… And I would like to await a response (I am sure there will be one) from the Vatican as to the contents of the publication.

Differences in interpretation of the end of times aside, creation of a world economic or govermental body seems imprudent and bares grave risk of abuse.

Hmmm? Does this mean that certain elements within the Vatican are capitulating to the One World global control folks or is there a deeper meaning to all of this? Still doing a head scratch.

You are connecting dots in your own mind and while I agree that this may happen if the vision is realized, the concept is not accounting for this necessarily. The argument being made is for a global economic authority which is not against the principle of subsidiarity. Moving ahead three or four steps into a global world power that enforces laws is against subsidiarity, but that is not what is being discussed, that is a hypothesis that admittedly does have a large amount of evidence in its favor.

God Bless.

It feeds a narrative; the Church is interested in centralized, global, authority. This doesn’t help in trying to convert or reconvert those who are thinking of becoming Catholic. So yes, I care because it makes it harder in the apologetics venue.

I agree, in fact I am a nervous wreck over it.

I’m literally shocked. This is very disheartening.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc…

You just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. In the meantime, the rest of us will be praying like we never have before. As far as I am concerned, this is the most serious moment in our lifetime. There is another force in the Vatican. I find it very interesting that the Pope is not mentioned at all.

Our Blessed Mother at Fatima said that Russia must be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart OR. . . .

I’m afraid we are in the “or”.

Read Caritas in Veritate paragraph 67. Maybe it will give you more insight as to what is being said and maybe alleviate some anxiety.

The call is for a global economy that is capable and motivated to help those in need. Not what we currently have which is a global economy that only helps those who can provide some benefit now or in the future. It is a call for governments to act with Christian virtues, not just in self serving interests. It will be interpreted as a call for a global, world wide government that is Vatican controlled, but that is not what is being said. The documents do not suggest that the Vatican would BE the global economic authority, just that there is a need for every nation to have a say in the global economy and that this global economy needs to be fashioned around Christian principles so that it can legitimately support those countries who cannot help themselves.

It is the distortion that is hiding the truth, this isn’t the first topic that this has happened and it won’t be the last. Fight the temptation to make the assumptions that the secular media and the whore of Babylon crowd will make. This is not associated with the Vatican becoming a world authority. It is not suggesting this nor is it hinting toward this.

God Bless.

The Vatican is working with the NWO/Bildebergers/Illuminati/Pentaverate??

Tinfoil hysteria, and nothing less.

I was not thinking the Vatican was going to be a world authority, the call for one is the problem, how many millions more have to die due to people with too much power?

Pope Benedict Calls For “Central World Bank” … Only He Didn’t. Here’s Why.

You may have seen this story which was headlined earlier today on the Drudge Report:
Code:
*The Vatican called on Monday for the establishment of a “global public authority” and a “central world bank” to rule over financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises.

A major document from the Vatican’s Justice and Peace department should be music to the ears of the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrators and similar movements around the world who have protested against the economic downturn.

The 18-page document, “Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority,” was at times very specific, calling, for example, for taxation measures on financial transactions. [CNBC](http://www.cnbc.com/id/45013499)]
In a scenario which will surely strike some as deja vu, the liberal jesuit Fr. Tom Reese previewed the contents of the document last week, in much the same way that the liberal jesuit Fr. Charles Curran “previewed” Humanae Vitae for the mainstream media before the document was actually released (the pope overruled Fr. Curran’s claims that the Church would endorse contraception — but the media had already made up its mind and few bothered to actually read what the pope had to say).

Here’s Fr. Reese on MSNBC “explaining” the news:

youtube.com/watch?v=9F2g15JSbzs&feature=player_embedded

Notice that Fr. Reese does NOT correct the news anchor that this document comes from a vatican congregation — not the pope! Fr. Reese seems perfectly happy to help the mainstream media fundamentally misunderstand the authority of teaching this document enjoys. He claims that the pope has “more in common with the people at occupy wallstreet” than the tea party, even though he has to immediately walk back that claim when it is pointed out to him how violent (and anti-Catholic!) the Occupy Rome demonstrations were (as I blogged about last week). I think it’s no surprise that Fr. Reese spends so much time talking about the 60′s — that’s still his cultural frame of reference.

Rather than get into the nitty-gritty of the 18-page document (which I may do at a later point), let me focus on the most important point: framing. Here’s how Cardinal Turkson, President of the Congregation for Justice and Peace, and Bishop Toso, the secretary, explained how the document should be received and read (underlining mine):
  • …It is in this spirit of discernment that the Holy See, with the note of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, wishes to make a contribution which might be useful to the deliberations of the G-20 meeting”.
Code:
Bishop Toso explained that the aim of the note is “suggest possible paths to follow, in line with the most recent social Magisterium, for the implementation of financial and monetary policies…”

The Church *does not wish to enter into the technical issues* behind the current economic crisis, but remains within the ambit of her religious and ethical functions…
I have nothing to immediately add to that, because the very authors of the document make clear how it should be evaluated: namely, as a “contribution” (as opposed to a mandate), as a “possible path” (as opposed to a moral proscription), in line with the Magisterium’s social teaching (as opposed to introducing a new teaching), without getting into the technical issues (because the Church is an expert in humanity, not economics) while fully staying within the Church’s religious and ethical functions.

With those extremely important guidelines in mind, we can more fruitfully read the text.

That said, I am absolutely sure the medie cycle for the coming days and weeks will totally miss all these key points and distill this document down to misleading statements such as “Pope Benedict Endorses Central World Bank.” But as I explain above, he didn’t.

Fr. Reese and his liberal Catholic friends would be better served acting as messengers of the Church’s teaching as opposed to creators of it.

I don’t see it. Paragraph 67 seems to corroborate our worst fears.

“so that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth. One also senses the urgent need to find innovative ways of implementing the principle of the responsibility to protect[146] *and of giving poorer nations an effective voice in shared decision-making. This seems necessary in order to arrive at a political, juridical and economic order which can increase and give direction to international cooperation for the development of all peoples in solidarity…**to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace; to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration: for all this, there is urgent need of a true world political authority…*Obviously it would have to have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums.”

This is even more shocking because it is more encompassing. The Church is calling for a Global authority, with “real teeth” which is “necessary” to arrive at a “political, juridical and economic” ends. This “solidarity” seeks “food security and peace”? It also seeks to protect the “environment” and “regulate migration”?

To accopmplish the above, which relates to virtually everything I do on a daily basis, the Church wants to ensure that the Global entity above has enough “authority” to “ensure compliance”?

Wow…just wow. Did the Occupy Wallstreet Marxists draft this? unbelievable.

I love it. I’m sure the republican catholics on these forums will dismiss this and say it’s up to debate. The tea party movement and this whole idea that we need to stop taxing the rich and deregulate the market is completely un-catholic. Economics as taught today is completely devoid of morality. This is what the church has consistently taught against. A market which is driven by profit alone can not produce results consistent with the common good. Basically, protestant neo-liberal free-market capitalism is wrong.

I wonder what Fr. Sirico and the Acton institute thinks about this. His laissez faire capitalism model is laughable in light of catholic tradition.

It’s time for republican catholics to take the plank out of their eye before criticizing democrat catholics on life issues. Guess what, your both wrong.
