Vatican Cardinal: ‘Individual bishops’, not just conferences must fight culture of death (exclusive)

Per LifeSite News:The bishops of the world must, as individuals, take the lead in combating the Culture of Death, and not wait for the national conferences, Cardinal Raymond Burke told LifeSiteNews.com in an interview yesterday.

“It should be emphasized that the individual bishop has a responsibility in this matter. Sometimes what happens is the individual bishops are unwilling to do anything because they wait for the national bishops’ conference to take the lead.”

Warning against some of the bureaucratic trends of “truth by committee” in the Church’s organisation, Cardinal Burke said, “Simply by the way these conferences work, it can be years before some kind of effective direction is given, and then oftentimes because this direction is discussed and debated, it can get very watered down.”

He emphasized that the involvement of the bishops should be constant, and not merely a matter of issuing a statement once. “We’re not writing term papers here where you make reference to an earlier document and that’s sufficient.” In public life, he said, the message has to be stated and re-stated and kept up to date.

Bishops are human beings and sometimes the ‘red tape’ thinking needs to be put aside. I suspect the average Bishop knows what the culture of death issues are and needs to mention them not once but more often to those in his diocese.

I would think the culture of death includes many things: abortion on demand, unjust war, poverty, hunger, preventable disease, murder, violence, theft, adultery, guns as instruments of death, the selling and abuse of recreational drugs, torture, rape, spousal abuse, bullying, greed, love of money and material possessions to the exclusion of people, animal cruelty, lack of charity, religious and ethnic intolerance and discrimination, hypocrisy, incivility, self-destructive behavior. Would you agree?

I would add idolatry and apostasy to the list, at first blush. However, there are certain of those evils that stand above (or below) all the others.
 
Italian journalist Vittorio Messori writing of a conversation he had with Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger:
The future Benedict XVI told me that among the unforeseen and contradictory effects of Vatican-II was the diminution in the importance of bishops, which on the contrary, the Council wished to re-emphasize. In fact, however, the autonomy and the freedom itself of a bishop over his own diocese were caged in and coopted by the establishment of national bishops’ conferences. These conferences, Ratzinger pointed out, have no theological basis; they are not part of the Church structure as are parishes, dioceses and the papacy. They are simply institutions, of recent origin, which were created for practical reasons but which have gradually created a weighty structure of their own, becoming in effect “little Vaticans.”

ETA: Oh, and I imagine that Cardinal Burke is also referring to individual bishops following canon law regarding not allowing pro-abortion politicians to receive communion. I can’t help but wonder if Cardinal Burke is speaking (indirectly) to Cardinal Dolan here. :hmmm:

Many bishops already do this. Bishop Loverde for example. Let us each encourage our own priests and bishop and not be too concerned about comparing one to another.

Which kind of leadership do you mean? As in Conferences need to take the lead, or that the Pope needs to take the lead or that each Bishop needs to take the lead?

It’s everything opposite to ‘The Culture of Life’… IOW- evil.
