Vatican Checking Up On US Nuns!

I do believe our Holy Father means business.

It seems to me that if you aren’t doing anything wrong then you shouldn’t worry about someone looking at what you are doing. Why live in darkness.

I realize that is kind of a simplistic thought but it seems to me that the word “transparency” is thrown around a lot today but no one actually wants to follow it.

I agree. The religious in the US need to get back in line with the Vatican.
 
And about time too.

I do sincerely believe that many of those who profess to be ‘Nuns’ are nothing but charlatans who invent alternative spiritualities and harbour an offensive undercurrent that destabilises and demerits the Holy Priesthood. They want a single cushy life under the guise of love for Christ and at the same time use it to offend and emasculate good Catholic men. The service they offer is self serving and the ministry they do is self ministering. I can tell ya it does not wash with me at all.

There is a wonderful sign in the wearing of the veil and an even more powerful one in discarding it.

The Holy Spirit however will ensure that all the orders that harbour erroneous ‘sisters’ will die out. This is so clear to see at present. I do not mourn their demise but rejoice in it for the cause of all those good sisters in these orders who have gone to their eternal reward, who were true to their vocation and their vows. In fact their grotesque disobedience is their self mad road to destruction and thankfully it doesn’t have a speed limit.

Let that day come soon. Looks like the Holy Father is pushing the Holy Spirit into third gear with the cleansing process!!

How to recognise them? If they wear a habit, embrace them. If they don’t then approach with caution. That has been my experience and that is my advice.

I think you are over generalizing. I know many fine women religious who do not wear a habit but do live in community and do work tirelessly for the Church and are not dissobedient. The habit does not make the religious. These women dedicate their lives to Christ and many, many work well into their 80’s FULL TIME while priests generally retire at 75 and spend retirement on the golf course. It is not a put down on priests, they do deserve to retire, and enjoy life (my pastor is waiting for the day anxiously) but so do the sisters. One sister I know in her late 70’s works at least 12 hours a day then also has a second part time job. They need to support their order. Not only do they work but they also have duties within the congregation, such as development, spirituality, finances etc. These women are wonderful and just because they do not wear a habit does not make them out to be what you describe.
 
When I was a kid I honestly believed the nuns all went to the same Gestapo school. I thought the principal took a strange delight in paddling those rotten kids sent to her office (I spent a lot of time there). I was the problem kid in that school, always in trouble, never doing my assignments, always in fights. I must have been a handful for those nuns, I looked at them at the time as mean. I reasoned they always looked at me as ‘the problem kid’.
Looking back now as a middle-aged man I have immense respect for those old-fashioned, habited nuns. They had enormous faith and wanted the children they taught to carry that on. They prayed for us, they gave us the priviledge of going to Mass. And when we needed it…they gave us a wallop where the sun dont shine.
One of these ‘old school’ nuns (who was very strict) told me I was bright child and I had enormous potential, and I shouldn’t throw it away. Many times after a spanking she hugged me and said she would be praying for me.
I saw her in a different light. The years have come and gone, but I have not forgotten those nuns, nor thier prayers for me. Those prayers would reach far into the future.
We need to return to that. So I for one am glad the Holy Father is doing this.

I did say that has been my experience. The unveiled have alternative motives and promote an alternative spirituality that does not conform. Plain and simple.

I went to a non-discernment Advent retreat with the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was really great to see a lot of young, enthusiastic nuns in habits. 🙂

A habit doesn’t make one holy but can give a glimpse into an order’s politics/orthodoxy.

I think this is a good point. We shouldn’t generalize. That is why the Vatican Congregation is studying the issue rather than simply placing the habited nuns on the right and the habitless nuns on the left where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Nuns come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them have gone a bit far afield (even with the best of intentions), but not all of them. At least, that’s been my experience.

In short, simply because a nun has no habit doesn’t mean she’s automatically a flaming heretic. 😉
 
From the NYT article - “Cardinal Levada sent a letter to the Leadership Conference saying an investigation was warranted because it appeared that the organization had done little since it was warned eight years ago that it had failed to “promote” the church’s teachings on three issues: the male-only priesthood, homosexuality and the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church as the means to salvation.”

I wonder where those crazy nuns got an idea like that? -

Wow :eek: This post reeks with HATE Fergal! You might want to talk to someone about that. (a priest? a counsellor?)

While I do appreciate the more traditional orders myself (someday,God willing, I hope to become a nun), you are lumping a lot of good in with the bad. Not that there are any corrupt priests around.:nope: Let’s keep a perspective on this.

I do agree that his checkup is good, and I hope good comes from it.
