Actually yes.

A Muslim has the advantage over pagans in that they recognize that the God of Abraham is the Lord and Creator of the Universe.

As to the exent that they actually KNOW God as truely revealed by Him, they lack on many fronts.

Have you ever been in a surgery? Lay people look like they are wearing habits, complete with masks, so I believe your point is a bit tenuous. But for the sake of arguement, it would seem to me that in a place like Africa, for the time a surgery would be going on it would be understood that the Religious would wear appropriate and modest clothing for the circumstances.

Thanks! I kind of was thinking about Middle Eastern garb, too.Mother Teresa’s nuns seem to work just fine in all kind of weather among all kinds of disparate folk with their habits on.Actually a simple, climate appropriate habit seems more practical than street clothes to me.

Did the Lord call upon us to accommodate ourselves, or to deny ourselves? Is not the clerical garb associated with Holy Orders a part of denial of self, especially when it might lead to discomfort? Look at the Monks. Does it look like they are dressed for comfort, or holiness? And, there’s the rub.

Sure, I agree that religious habits are to reflect poverty & self denial but if they are overly cumbersome or impractical for the climate how would that help members of religious orders to serve others?
I’m all for religious habits, by the way.

They certainly should be tailored for the work of the sisters, while preserving the inward and outward dignity of their consecration. The American trend toward worldliness has most certainly failed. And it has borne fruit: declining numbers and declining orthodoxy. Time for a tune up.

The reality of a visitation, along with opposition calls to resist, stand as prima facie evidence of the allegations being investigated… In America, at least, “some” of the orders have run amok. In America, some of the Bishops have run amok. Heck, you could argue that the American Church as a whole is in need of a tune-up.

Amen to that.

Knowing human nature, such secularization of dress was caused by, and also contributed to a certain secularization of beliefs and actions. Let’s fast forward 40+ years and you can see that some orders (or portions of orders) have spun nearly out of control. Feminist thinking - even lesbian thinking, has not only taken root, but is apparently flourishing in certain (limited) places.

Clearly, too much of our world has crept into the Holy Orders. Too much of the world has crept into the Church. Too many “baptisms” were attempted in the name of the non-gender specific “creator, redeemer and sanctifier”. We bemoan this in many of the threads in these forums - and with good reason. When such heterodoxy begins to approach the tipping point, action must be taken. If we believe in God, we must also believe in the evil one. This is exactly how the evil one works - as smoke entering the Church through the gap beneath the door. We are seeing how decades of smoke has clouded the thoughts and actions of some.

Why single out the nuns? The doctrinal and moral errors committed by the leadership of the American church (e.g. Cardinal Mahoney) has done far more damage to the cause of Christ and His Church in America than some liberal nuns!

I agree. But, I figure, we have to cross one bridge at a time.

I think that nuns in habit not being a visible part of society anymore has contributed (along with many other things) to the “dying out” sotospeak of Catholicism, especially in the U.S. I’ve often thought about how I wish the requirement would stand for all who feel called to religious life. You’re supposed to be separate. Let your light shine in your attire as well as your actions. Get people who just *see *you thinking, as well as though you actually minister to.
