Sadly, xenophobic racism is as American as apple pie. Its victims do cycle through: the Irish were replaced by the Italians and Poles, who were in turn replaced by the Puerto Ricans, not mention ALWAYS the Jews as targets of this venom. Now we’re frightened of Mexicans and Muslims. {sigh…}
It reminds of Lyndon Johnson’s description of the pecking-order in his Texas: The Whites kick the Blacks; the The Blacks kick the Mexicans; the Mexicans kick the Indians. and the Indians kick – the prairie dogs.
