"From the Associated Press:

The Vatican has put a German diocese on notice that it disapproves of its challenge to church teaching on whether Catholics who remarry can receive Communion.

The diocese of Freiburg issued an official set of guidelines this week explaining how such divorced and remarried Catholics could receive the sacrament.

Church teaching holds that Catholics who don’t have their first marriages annulled, or declared null by a church tribunal, before remarrying cannot participate fully in the church’s sacraments because they are essentially committing adultery. The issue has vexed the church for decades and Pope Francis has said it is something that must be addressed.

But the Vatican said Tuesday that Freiburg’s local initiative “risks causing confusion.” It said the issue will be discussed at a meeting of bishops next year."

But…but…but Pope Francis…everything changed…but…😃

I’d really love to read the whole response the Vatican gave (that this interview is quoting from),so if anyone can find it, please post 🙂

I searched. The article is an AP by Nicole Winfield. There are no other references, as of yet, to the statement except her article. She’s a reporter in Rome. I don’t even remember my Twitter account as I don’t use it. If you have a Twitter account you can ask directly here: twitter.com/nwinfield

Regarding the matter, I think it is disrespectful to try to go ahead of the Pope on a matter he said he is addressing.

Thanks 🙂

This article (which unfortunately tries to sensationalize a bit) includes a slightly fuller quote:

“In this context, offering special pastoral solutions by individuals or local offices can risk causing confusion,” he said in a statement, stressing the importance of “conducting a journey in full communion with the Church community.”

Hello,

It wasn’t a direct response to whatever is going on in this German diocese (something that is not clear to me as far as who said what) but I suppose it doesn’t take much “dot connecting” to tie the two events together.

Cardinal Paolis made some more direct and forceful comments about the German situation. vaticaninsider.lastampa.it/en/world-news/detail/articolo/divorzio-divorce-chiesa-iglesia-church-28418/

Ah, I see, it was Rev. Lombardi that made the statement. This reminds me of an argument or comment I once read or heard about how there is no such thing as an atheist because we need to take so much information on faith.

There is a saying in the Dominican Republic that goes: No hay mal que por bien no venga. That is: there isn’t bad that for good does not come. This was not good for the Archdiocese to try to jump the gun but one good thing has come out of it which is that many people who have misunderstood the Pope can rest at ease now knowing he is not going to change Church doctrines - far from it.

Thanks. The top link doesn’t appear to work for me, can you re-post?

It’s working now, thank you 🙂
Yeah, it works now.

“It is right”, he added, Fr. Lombardi] “that the Church should move as a community in reflection and prayer, and that she takes common pastoral directions in relation to the most important points – such as the pastoral of the family – under the guidance of the Pope and the bishops. The convocation of the extraordinary Synod clearly indicates this path. In this context, the proposal of particular pastoral solutions by local persons or offices carries the risk of engendering confusion. It is opportune to emphasise the importance of following a path in full communion with the ecclesial community”.
