The idea that markets are self-regulating has been proven wrong. Economics ought to be “an activity of and for human beings” rather than a spiral of production and consumption that satisfy narrowly defined human needs. Economic life should be properly seen as a as an exercise in human responsibility, intrinsically oriented towards the promotion of human dignity, the pursuit of the common good and the full development of people, families and societies.
