Vatican denies it will recognize East Jerusalem

The Vatican said on Tuesday that an economic agreement it is negotiating with Israel will not mean the de facto recognition of Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem.

The Vatican was responding to reports in Palestinian media that the deal, which involves tax status and other financial issues concerning Church properties in the Holy Land, would result in a recognition of Israel’s control of East Jerusalem.

The Vatican and Israel have been negotiating the financial status of Church properties for the past 13 years. Progress reportedly were made in the latest talks, but there is no indication that an agreement has been reached.

Well, it’s good to see that the Vatican isn’t playing politics. In fact, that’s probably a much wiser move on their part… you know… JUST secure the tax exempt status for their property. I mean, there are very few Catholics in Israel anyways. Wouldn’t want to

And it’s just as good too. I don’t think I agree with the Vatican on the politics of Palestine becoming a state. Aren’t they OK with that? But, I can disagree politically all I want… you won’t find Palestinian statehood anywhere in the Catechism.

They need to engage with both sides, while at the same time maintaining their property rights in the area. This is difficult and time consuming, but time is one thing the Vatican has on it’s side. The Catholic Church in it’s modern form has been in the area for 800 years

Good thing the Vatican will not recognize East Jerusalem, they should keep far away from any political entanglements with Israel in my opinion. The Israel lobby has so much influence over the American government it’s embarrassing, when foreign governments have more influence over this nation than the voters. Israel’s co opting of evangelical Christians is very disturbing as well, The Vatican should maintain it’s distance, and advocate humane treatment and justice for the Palestinians.
