VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican is denying that it has rejected several candidates for U.S. ambassador to the Holy See because of their support for abortion rights. Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said Friday that he checked the reports in the American and Italian media and there is no truth to them.

He also told the U.S. Catholic News Service that no names of proposed ambassadors had reached the Vatican from Washington. The reports underline possible tensions between the Vatican and the government of President Barack Obama because of its support for abortion rights and stem cell research, a reversal the policies of the George W. Bush administration.

So the Vatican hasn’t rejected anybody.
Does that mean that the Asst. Undersecretary of State for Catholic Stuff hasn’t contacted somebody at the Papal Nuncio’s office with potential nominees and been told they would go over like lead balloons? That way no (unsuitable) names reach the Holy See.

Plausible deniability is not always a bad thing.

It is time that Beau stop calling himself “Catholic” and start quoting reliable news sources…

For the record, Beau has regularly posted false information and his/her/its posts are rarely, if ever, consistent with the teachings of the Catholics Church. Therefore, if he/she/it says something, then you should immediately doubt the truthfulness and accuracy of anything he/she/it says.

Vatican sources said not only was the report inaccurate, but that its premise was faulty. The Vatican has not been in the habit of vetting the personal beliefs or ideas of candidates before accepting them as ambassadors, they said.
There have been occasions in the last two years when the Vatican has objected to ambassadorial candidates – from Argentina, in the case of a divorced Catholic with a live-in partner, and from France, where the candidate was an openly gay Catholic in a union with another man.
“For Catholic ambassadors, there is the question of their matrimonial situation. But outside of that, I don’t think there are other criteria,” said one Vatican source.

A talk show host just today “read” from the newswire that Carolyn Kennedy was the latest nominee to be rejected. I wonder where that newswire is coming from?

A few days ago her name did appear as a possible candidate in several news articles, but the articles also mentioned that she was unacceptable to the Vatican. The White House denied that she was being considered, but I think it was face-saving denial.

This was already discussed in the Politics 2009 forum. The Vatican didn’t formally reject anyone (yet). However, they let it be known, informally, that some would not be that welcomed:

(Editor’s Note: Conflicting news accounts have been published over the last 24 hours regarding whether the Holy See has rejected any ambassadors proposed by the Obama Administration. The primary difference in the accounts seems to hinge on whether the U.S. government has formally put forward to the Vatican the names of possible diplomats. Catholic News Service, which operates under the auspices of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, reports: “No proposals about the new ambassador of the United States to the Holy See have reached the Vatican, and therefore it is not true that they have been rejected. The rumors circulating about this topic are not reliable,” the spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, told Catholic News Service April 9. But the independent and more orthodox Catholic News Agency has published a story confirming the Vatican’s rejection of some Obama candidates as ambassador to the Holy See. In a story published yesterday, CNA said it had “contacted a Vatican official from the Office of the Secretary of State who said that he could not elaborate on the names that have been proposed so far by the Obama administration.” The official told CNA “there have only been informal exchanges of opinions, not direct, official proposals” from Washington. “Obviously, the exchange has not been fruitful in finding a mutually satisfying candidate, otherwise, at this point, there would have been an announcement, and there isn’t one,” the official told CNA.)

Possibly here:

The Telegraph reported:

The Vatican has blocked the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador, according to reports.

Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Ms Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

Mr Obama was reportedly seeking to reward John F Kennedy’s daughter, who publicly gave her support to his election bid. She had been poised to replace Hillary Clinton as New York senator, but dropped out amid criticism that she lacked enough experience for the job.

The Italian paper said that the Vatican strongly disapproved of Mr Obama’s support for abortion and stem cell research. The impasse over the ambassadorial appointment threatens to cloud his meeting with the Pope during a G8 summit in Itay in July.

I think “The Telegraph” and “Vatican sources” says all that needs be said. These two phrases seldom convey truth. When the Vatican speaks out, they use title and position. When the Telegraph prints news, titilation and fiction.

I hope you are right. i would like to think that bthe Obama Administration is not stupid enough to float some of the names that the vatican allegedly rejedted. However one has to wonder why they have not yet fillled this position and why they refused to comment on whether they had suggested caroline kennedy to the vatican. you agree, i hope, that none of the people thus far mentioned should be ambassor to the vatican.

I don’t think the Obama administration understands or maybe cares who would be acceptable. If they think that Caroline Kennedy is even a plausible choice for this post, they certainly don’t “get it.”

Caroline Kennedy is just the latest in a series of pro-abortion on demand, pro-embryonic stem-cell experimentation Catholic by baptism politicians to be offered by Obama. Does anyone see a deliberate pattern here? Is he deliberately and arrogantly trying to push the envelope now that Notre Dame has rubber stamped his stance on these by welcoming him as commencement speaker, and offering to grant him an honorary law degree?

Why doesn’t he nominate someone like Alan Keyes as ambassador, a man who is not only a baptized Catholic but is also committed to the practice of Catholic faith and morals? A man whom he also ran against politically in Chicago a few years back, and in a round about way, helped to launch him into the national spotlight.

It is comforting to know that the Vatican will not be duped by politically motivated ploys particularly those that would be likely to cause grave scandal among the faithful.

Caroline Kenned even wrote a book on why we should all be “pro-abortion on demand, pro-embryonic stem-cell experimentation Catholics”.

How about Rick Santorum? I think he would be a good choice. Unfortunately, Obama does not want a Catholic who is faithful to the teachings of the Church; he wants a Kennedy-type “Catholic.”
