Vatican document on global finances triggers
Lockdown, any new Vatican text
Must have advanced authorization

“The document of “Iustitia et Pax” on the global financial crisis is blasted with criticism. The secretary of state disowns it. “L’Osservatore Romano” tears it to shreds. From now on, any new Vatican text will have to be authorized in advance by the cardinal …”

I knew there was something wrong with that document.
 
It shouldn’t have to be this way, because there IS a real need for Christ centered peace and justice initiatives in this world, but I’ve reluctantly concluded that my attitude to anything being promoted by people currently IN “peace and justice” committees must be:

Red alert, Shields Up, Phasers on Stun… Proceed with extreme caution, and prepare to repel boarders!

Obviously, that idea to tax stock trades struck a nerve somewhere!
 
I am totally confused about all of this but I do want to say this: I think that it is a good thing that Cardinal Bertone has made sure that all documents are inspected and reviewed by his office before publication.
 
This is a false story. The so called “lockdown” had to do with a Papal document that was prematurely posted before it was reviewed. It had absolutely nothing to do with the document released by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace which was thouroughly reviewed and approved. You are, of course, welcome to disagree with the document. However, as Catholics, we should avoid this type of dissembling in order to discredit a document that is rooted in solid Catholic Social teaching.

Just for the record, I never said I disagreed with the document. But I strongly suspect that the stock trade tax had a lot to do with the fracas.

On Monday, one source said that in preparing the document, the Justice and Peace council had in fact worked closely with the Secretariat of State’s “Second Section,” which deals with foreign affairs, and that the Second Section had reviewed and corrected the text ahead of time — precisely because everyone knew it dealt with sensitive issues.

Second, sources said Cardinal Bertone did issue a recent instruction regarding the Secretariat of State’s role in releasing documents, but it had nothing to do with the Justice and Peace text on economic justice. Instead, they said, it was provoked by an unrelated mistake that occurred the same week — the premature release of Pope Benedict’s annual message on migration, which was posted briefly on a Vatican Web site, apparently before the Secretariat of State had seen it.

Exactly. It’s interesting and a little amusing to see the desperate tactics some right-wing Catholics are using to avoid giving serious consideration to this document:p.

Good morning, Edwin,

I’m a conservative Catholic who doesn’t consider myself right wing. When the term right wing comes up, I think of the Catholics who call themselves Traditional Catholics.

Anyway, I still think that the professor is using the Catholic church and the document under discussion as a platform for his socialist political agenda. So, as you see, I have given this issue some serious consideration.

The professor that was on the Peace and Justice Committee that wrote the note to the G20 meeting. That professor helped write the third section of the note which gave specific political/economic remedies. It’s the Church’s policy to not give specific remedies, but to let governments sort these things out among themselves.

Also, the Church decries both Socialism and Capitalism; the specific political/economic remedies written into the note by that professor were socialist in nature.

I could never find an English translation to the document, and have lost the translations I made with a Google translation engine.
