Vatican Endorses Pro-Life Movie Doonby

The popular culture remains resolute and largely of one mind in its defense of abortion.

On television and in the movies, no one ever seems to die or suffer serious health or emotional consequences after undergoing a legal abortion. Abortion opponents are most often portrayed as kooks, hypocrites, murderers, or worse. No one ever seems to question the morality or the constitutionality of the laws that keep the process legal. Is there any other issue in the legal or medical field that Hollywood treats with such one-sided reverence?

Hmm… let me first get out of the way an objection. Just because a favorable article is written in L’Osservatore Romano, this doesn’t mean that the Vatican has endorsed the film. I may be wrong, but I suspect that Fr. Gianfranco Grieco was expressing a personal opinion and not stating the official position of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

However, I am sure the film is fine and worth seeing. Here is a synopsis from the film’s official website

Sam Doonby, a mysterious and handsome drifter, steps off an interstate bus and quickly becomes the talk of a small Texas town. After finding work at Leroy’s Country Blues bar, his musical talents make him a small-town star, attracting the attention of Laura, the beautiful but spoiled daughter of local doctor Cyrus Reaper.

Sam seems to always be in the right place at the right time to prevent disasters from happening in the town. Before long, jealousy and suspicion drive the townspeople to question his sudden arrival and motives. Finally, when Laura begins to doubt him as well, he disappears as quickly as he materialized. Soon, everyone realizes that there was more to Sam Doonby than they understood, especially Cyrus and his family as the doctor’s past comes back to haunt him.

The US News article says that the film will have a limited release and IMDB.com estimates the budget of the movie was $2 million. So this may be a film which will mainly be seen on DVD.

The film’s website says that the movie will be showing in eight theaters. Three are in Mississippi, four are in Texas and one is in Tennessee.

Well, perhaps the Vatican did not in fact endorse the movie. However, we have to use the title that the article uses so that is what I did. I personally have no idea whether or not the Vatican actually endorsed the movie. I don’t think they’ve ever endorsed a movie in the past. Have they?

No, I don’t believe they have. And I apologize for not being more clear in my earlier post. The sort of mis-reporting which I mentioned is all too common among the secular news media.
