Vatican Expert Questions Cardinal's Exaltation of Obama

Rome, Italy, Jul 6, 2009 / 12:06 pm (CNA).- Responding to Cardinal Georges Cottier’s recent article praising President Obama, Vatican analyst Sandro Magister has said the cardinal almost exalts Obama as “a new Constantine, the head of a modern empire that is also generous toward the Church."

In Magister’s article, published yesterday, he casts doubt on remarks made by Cardinal Georges Cottier, 87, who lauded President Obama’s abortion stance in the Catholic magazine, “30 Days.”

Cardinal Cottier, a Swiss Dominican who served as the official theologian of the pontifical household for several years under John Paul II, discussed two of President Obama’s speeches: his commencement speech at the University of Notre Dame and the address at the Al-Azhar Islamic University in Cairo. The cardinal noted that in both speeches, President Obama gave “a glimpse of politics that can be usefully compared with fundamental elements of the social doctrine of the Catholic Church.”

I find the title odd. Magister does not question Cottier, or “cast doubts” on his conclusions. He simply describes Cottier’s article. Magister’s article is available here:

He buttoned that one. Obama is not generous toward the real Church, but he certainly is the “Constantine” of dissident Catholics, or perhaps their pope. He is definitely trying to separate Catholics from the real Church and coalesce them into a nominally “Catholic” force that ignores the Church’s teachings but supports his agenda.
 
Mr. Obama has skillfully manipulated the inactive/indifferent portion of the American Catholic Church, who push for abortion rights, nationalization of healthcare/welfare/retirement and the emancipation of all illegals currently residing in our country. These emotive-based items driven by the early 20th-century Progressives (socialists/communists) are at the core of societal divisions, and they have made their way into the American church. He is successfully dividing American Christians, and he is doing it quietly and very effectively. And he’s doing it basically by appealing to our emotive reasoning.

We applaud the 85+ Bishops who spoke out against the Notre Dame commencement address embarrassment – but what of the other Bishops? Why are the American Bishops, in general, opening their arms towards a socialistic society when the great one, John Paul II, fought against it nearly his entire papacy? The American Catholic church is being torn apart before our very eyes, and those who do not see it or better yet, refuse to see it, better wake up, because God is watching. And that includes you and I.

Well said! With some of the things I see coming from the America bishops, I wonder if some are Catholic. They seem so enamored of Mr. Obama’s social policies that central issues such as abortion become background issues. I submit that without the right to life the others are insignificant.

The operative words here are SEEMS and ALMOST. This is Magister’s OPINION; he does not present it as fact.

I read Cardinal Cottier’s document and could not find an example where he DID exalt Obama. He did, however, show optimism that Obama could be approachable on certain (NOT ALL) matters of Catholic Social Doctrine. He further offered an historic ANALOGY (NOT parallel.)
