What is really sad is the world.
Listening to RR (Relevant Radio (Catholic radio)) today the guest said that Catholicism is actually growing at a pretty good clip around the world. So despite these things that happen that can really be for some of us, very hard to take… I don’t know, I don’t want to make excuses, there are none but maybe there is a big picture as well to this.

I understand these reports iniated in the Italian press, specifically la Repubblica. I was trying to point out that a pro communist newspaper would have an agenda against the Catholic Church. Sorry for the confusion.

Ahh, “I see” said the blind man… thanks…

i won’t deny that. i was happy to hear that the Pope will be praying for the world and the Church when he retires. he will do a lot of good doing that. so he will continue to be a servant.

The best antidote for rumors and gossip is openness and transparency, to dispel doubts and untruths.

In the absence of reliable information, then rumors will abound. It sells papers, and brings people to websites.
I am curious. What do you consider ‘reliable information’ that can dispel malicious rumours of say, gay sex scandals? I suppose, a report that says that “there is no gay sex scandals”? 🤷

PS: Reliable information abounds. The problem is that the tabloids ignore the reliable because it is boring and go straight for the unreliable but sensational headlines. Sensational lies are what sells papers. Boring truths don’t.

Every organization needs make the decision themselves That is, what to reveal of internal documents, and how to handle crises. I think that there is a consistent, repeated, and well established pattern of secrecy, and withholding of information in these cases, which may very well be the best course of action to minimize damage and cost to the institution, but which does not improve credibility with the public.

However, it does seem that sometimes when something is forced to light, which has been hidden, such as the recent disclosure through subpoena of the personnel records in Los Angeles, that the behavior of some of the top officials was inexcusable, perhaps criminal.

My perception is that this is like torture by a million slices, each time there is a new revelation. My opinion, as a non-expert, is that earlier and fuller disclosure would have resulted in more credibility, and quicker disposal of the matters. My sense is that many people are extremely skeptical right now, and that the press plays into that.

very well said.

Who would not get angry at the misreporting? Answer me this!

Which misreporting? We still don’t know what exactly Father Lombardi was referring to.

To answer your question in a very general way: Often the reason things are misreported is that the subject of that misreporting has done a poor job getting his/her/its own message out. If I were in that situation, I would not waste a lot of energy being angry at erroneous reporting, and instead try to address my own failure to communicate.

Don’t know where else to post this, and don’t feel comfortable posting the link, but was affected by March 2 London Daily Mail article by someone the paper calls a ‘leading Catholic writer’ - maybe someone will want to look for it - it is not at all unfavorable to Pope Emeritus Benedict (please forgive me if I’ve got the new title wrong - I thought I heard it on a podcast recently from either CALive or EWTN)… in fact, it shows an enormous sacrifice and gamble this writer sees him to have taken. … I was sure that any mainstream publication would have a negative take, and when I realized what I was reading it was actually enlightening and, for me and for that writer, **greatly increases the poignancy of what is happening **. . . .

It does not put Pope Emeritus Benedict himself in a bad light, but it does put the entire ruling body of the Vatican in a horrible light.

As a Catholic, I am only interested in knowing that the teachings of Our Lord remain uncompromised in any way. If some of its leaders are involved in unseemly behavior, it is well to remember that the Church is founded on Christ, and not on any one or more individuals within His Church, no matter how high they may have risen in that Church. We don’t follow Cardinals, not even Popes, in the spiritual sense, but Christ Himself.

Forget not that Judas rose to become one of the select few whom Christ considered His inner circle of friends. Was his act of betrayal a scandal? Indeed it was, to have one of your closest confidants sell you out. But it was a scandal, too, that broke Christ’s heart, and how he wished His betrayer would repent, as Peter, our first Pope later did. Just as Christ no doubt prayed for His betrayer, we should not only pray for the departing Pope, the Church, and all the people in the Church, we should pray also that anyone involved in any scandal that might be present in the Vatican might repent and then courageously do whatever they must to make things right in the best interest of the Church.

Let any such scandal, and I’m not conceding it is true, only serve to underline the weakness of humans, the need for constant prayer and vigilance against the assaults of the devil, and that the bedrock of the Church and our salvation is none other than Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, whom we follow with all our hearts.

We follow Jesus, not men in black cassocks, who for the most part, do sacrifice their lives to bring Christ and His sacramental life into our lives. We honor the office of the priesthood, but we follow them only in the sense that they follow Christ, and when some of them let us down, we just keep on following the Master, and pray that He sends leaders who will be faithful to His teaching and the Father’s Will,

I was thinking , what report could be so bad that it would make a pope resign?
A report that causes a deep deep rift. I fear and fear.

What was Cardinal Bertone doing with the report in the first place? 😃 As the administrator of the Holy See and acting head of state of the Vatican City State, is he permitted to see everything the Holy Father can/could see?
