L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, listed its top 10 Rock Albums.

The Vatican’s Top 10 Rock Albums
  1. Revolver by the Beatles
  2. If I could Only Remember My Name by David Crosby
  3. The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd
  4. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
  5. The Nightfly by Donald Fagen
  6. Thriller by Michael Jackson
  7. Graceland by Paul Simon
  8. Achtung Baby by U2
  9. (What’s the story) Morning Glory by Oasis
  10. Supernatural by Carlos Santana
I’m a little suspect and quite surprised with some of the above albums and the artists themselves.

Personally speaking I am very offended that the Vatican would recommend any song by Michael Jackson considering what he has done.

Don’t they have more important things to do?

Backmasking is a farce. :rolleyes:
I suggest looking up the study of psychologist professors John R. Vokey and J. Don Read if you insist on such a myth.

Meaning that Jackson, who has led a very scandalous life, would be on that list. While it is true that no musician is perfect, some are very bad compared to others and should be avoided.

1)Thriller is one of the best albums of all time
2)The Church loves sinners, and Christ paid a dear price for all of us
3) Considering the very scandalous events within the Church and the pain She has had to endure as She purifies and renew Herself, I can’t see the Vatican tossing stones at Michae Jackson.

Michael Jackson Im sure the world knows was a very disturb and broken soul. Yet God loves him, and blessed him with great talent that he did use to uplift, not tear down, the world. Unlike many artists these days. 🤷

I doubt backmasking can influence a listener when the song is played forwards.

But there is no doubt in my mind that some musicians have dabbled into the occult such as Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.

One reason that an artist will backmask a message is to pledge their allegiance to one of several demons as a way to sell their records.
 
Joseph Niezgoda was a Beatles fanatic at one time and has a book out that details his research taken over 20 years on this band.

After a lifetime of listening, reading studying and pouring over Beatle material, there were many confusing questions raised from countless clues, backward masking, and pictures.

For me, this picture on a Beatles album is highly revolting! It reminds me of abortions.

He listened to all of Lennon’s songs, and **scores of lyrics that had once seemed innocent suddenly resounded with a new and sinister meaning. **
He noticed that John Lennon may well have sold his soul to the devil, and that the assassination was merely Satan collecting his due.

I’m not totally sold on everything he says but Niezgoda makes a strong case for the satanic influence on the beatles.
 
The writer is clearly out to make the Church look stupid. He or she is stating what happened in a very slanted manner. Check out this paragraph.

It praised The Simpsons on the series’ twentieth anniversary, saying that Homer’s religious confusion and ignorance were a “mirror of the indifference and the need that modern man feels toward faith”.

This is not a statement of praise. Does everyone see what I mean about slanting the report?

See, I think that sometimes people ignore the purpose of a lot of things that L’Osservatore Romano does. While it is a semi-official Vatican newspaper, very little of what it does is meant to serve as a guide to the Catholic faith. It comments on pop culture, history, science, and it writes articles on that subject. So here we have a list from the newspaper identifying ten pop milestones, ten moments that were important in the history of pop music. It makes no moral statement, and gives no holy seal of approval to anything.

Having lived and studied in the Eternal City as they call it, I think that most people don’t understand how the Vatican papers work. They are truly newspapers. They are not propaganda machines for the Catholic Church.

As you say, they will write about popular culture, politics, fashion and what have you. They also publish news that comes out of the official Vatican News Agency. In this sense, it is the official Vatican newspaper, in that the Vatican New Agency gives Zenit and L’Observatore the first opportunity to report, before they send a press release to other papers in Rome.

What the writer in the British paper did was to take each quote and twist and turn it. I don’t like that. That’s dishonest.

As I said before, I believe a backmasked message has little influence on a listener when the song is play forward, as it is supposed to be heard. I believe this is in line with your psychologists.

My intent on posting a link to that newspaper was to support my claim that a top ten song list from a Vatican newspaper was announced. I could have used any number of links. There are so many newspaper reporters that will take a story and slant it their way. They want to instill a viewpoint on you. You’ll hear the words “SPIN” used quite a lot. In a way, SPIN can be viewed as being dishonest.

Can we say the Vatican newspaper is not using SPIN? What is their intent on listing top 10 songs?

Not everybody is knowledgeable as you are when it comes to newspapers in the vatican. So I really do think the average person tends to think that a story in a Vatican newspaper can be relied on in a moral sense.

One danger in listing top ten albums is that it can convey the messgage to their readers that other albums from these artists are ok to listen to. And, it’s ok to listen to the majority of Rock and Roll songs out ther as well.

Take a popular song called “Imagine” by John Lennon, one of he Beatles. John Lennon asks us to imagine “there is no heaven above us, no hell below us”. Well I don’t accpet his belief system because I do believe there is a heaven and a hell.

To answer your question with any honesty and integrity I would have to know if the O.R. received an actual press release from the Vatican News Office or if it’s just using information that it received through some unofficial source.

I can say this. When they receive a press release from the VNO they have to publish it as is. They can comment on it either to introduce it or to close the article, but the release has to be cited without distortion. They have to be careful how the comment on official releases, because the VNO can withdraw its support or worse, contradict them in another journal or periodical. So they try to be very careful with official releases.

But as I said, I have no way of knowing if this was a press release from the Vatican News Office (VNO). I can’t say if this is truly what the Office for Culture would have said. I’m thinking of that department, because the other departments at the Vatican would not be looking at pop music. There are two departments that come to mind, one is Culture and the other is Social Communication. But culture seems more likely, if this is an official statement.

I didn’t read the article in O.R. I don’t get that edition of it. I get the American edition and it was not in the American edition.

I can’t believe that people are still obsessing over the backwards playing records. The truth is usually that if you’re hearing something it’s because you’re looking for it.

I love the “country song backwards” joke though. I think you also get your tractor back though 😛
 
What?!!! No Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band? No Carole King (Tapestry)? No Steppenwolf? No Bruce Springsteen (Born in the USA)? No Sinatra (Songs for Swingin’ Lovers)?

The Vatican’s list of pop is very odd indeed.
