I think John Cornwell’s ‘smoking gun’ in his initial attempt to discredit Pope Pius XII (I heard something about him altering his position) was the letter Pope Pius wrote when he was Papal Nuncio to Bavaria, part of which reads …“The scene that presented itself at [Communist headquarters] was indescribable . . … the building, once the home of a king, resounding with screams, vile language, profanities. Absolute hell. An army of employees were dashing to and fro, giving out orders, waving bits of paper, and in the midst of all this, a gang of young women, of dubious appearance, Jews like all the rest of them, hanging around in all the offices with lecherous demeanor and suggestive smiles. The boss of this female rabble was Levien’s mistress, a young Russian woman, a Jew and a divorcee, who was in charge. . . This Levien is a young man, of about 35, also Russian and a Jew. Pale, dirty, with drugged eyes, hoarse voice, vulgar, repulsive, with a face that is both intelligent and sly” (pp. 74-75).
The problem however is that Cornwell tried to claim the letter lay buried in Vatican archives for decades until he found it, when in reality there had been public mention of it several years before the release of Hitler's Pope.

I’ve heard this too. It seems to me, there is a bit of an age-old hostility against the Church in the UK, it’s just part of history, dealing with NI (more in the past thank goodness), etc. So, you bring up an important point in your post.

Darryl…I am coming from same…

The Soviets and Communist China need to repent to their world for their pogroms committed against their own people all for collectivism and the state. Right now Russia’s population is being decimated by AIDS and they don’t want to talk about it. The usual.

In time, Pius had more fear of communism than Naziism. All the hatred they did towards our country. I was in Mozambiqiue, and the humanitarians in there were missionaries and American Mennonites.

First thing Soviets did when it became independent…no affirmation in the headlines…‘America is the Enemy of the World!’…or when the Soviet aeroplot crashed with Samora Machel…all the pilot could babble was the Americans did it.

Angola did not have the Marxists take over. Partitions in the USA did support the anti-Marxist Angolan rebels. And Angola was never taken over to the degree by the communists, and fared much better.

Millions of innocent Mozambicans were killed, directly or indirectly. Only in the past few years through the internet and Protestant source from South Africa, did I find out about the atrocities committed against Christians by Marxists in the early years of their ‘liberation’.

How the Americans have treated the Afghanistans is very different than how the Soviets treated them.

To this day I pray for the conversion for Russia…to simply admit what it has done and ask forgiveness for all the deaths and hatred and class warfare as its errors to the world.

Likewise I pray for our country, and its and in this it would be to admit their guilt and ask the world’s forgiveness…just as I do for the lack of morals and race/class warfare we are seeing now as our country’s economy is deliberately being destroyed right in front of us. One third of our population has sexually transmitted diseases…and I heard same ratio for Russian people with Aids.

The Church is now mobilizing the laity to begin a new evangelization in our country, and hope it will eventually reach secular people.

In 2007, 83% of HIV infections in Russia were registered among injecting drug users, 6% among sex workers, and 5% among prisoners.[1] - though as of 2010 the injecting drug users’ share had gone down to ca. 70%.[2] In 2007, 93.19% of adults and children with advanced HIV infection were receiving antiretroviral therapy.[3][4] The official number of registered HIV-infected people — 703,781 (22 November 2012)[5]
I am sorry for the afflicted but I’m not sure if Russia is suffering from abnormally high rates of HIV. Population Russia 143 million plus, if one says abortion has hurt Russia and their growth rate, I have heard that.

I heard it on EWTN and that the government does not want this information out, have been trying to keep it covered up.

This is what was happening to Poland at the beginning of WWII. There were reports of atrocities against Poles and Jews, and then Jews being transported out…this about 39 or 1940.

You have to look at body count. America did not start WWII. It did not start communism. It did not have pogroms against its own people, it did not go to war against the Vatican or Catholics, although we have been marginalized as citizens here.

Marx, Hegel, Nietzche…this is the triumphant identified by John Paul II. Were they all Jews? Do I condemn the Jewish race? What Pius is describing is the aberration that was within communism. Re-consider the rapes…even among their own in Siberia…

I even remember the images of a movie where the Soviets through women off the train and into the snow to rape them…how utterly horrific as a woman…I think of the little children and women who are being abused and violated and even murdered right now.

The 20th century will be looked upon as the worst century of mankind. Pere Lamy, a French priest, prophesized that in the early 1930’s. On our side, abortion was made legal, the smut and sex culture is wiping out our native population through this practice along with the sexually transmitted diseases, 25% of our young teens infected. Now they are saying up to 30%, and are encouraging people in their 60’s of my generation to get tested for diseases because of past lifestyle.

Worst crime is loss of soul and eternal damnation.

But what is not being addressed and which I also considered most inhumane and unnecessary…was the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. The old clips were saying that the Japanese were going to commit suicide if they loss war…so it was done to save the lives of Japan…bomb dropped over Catholic church in Nagasaki…The Assumption of Mary into Heaven…Japanese Catholics say their own were the sacrifice gloriously taken up to heaven to end the war.

Ironic isn’t it.

It seems the good Father Lamy only passed away in 1931 and had mystical experiences from early in life, born in 1855 or 1853. mysticsofthechurch.com/2009/11/pere-lamy-father-john-edward-lamy.html So, it may not change the essence of his mystical experiences, howevere, it may well have been before the 1930s. I have no idea as to whether these can be called “approved” messages or nothing more than private revelation.

Jharek…I will have to contact Fr MItch himself…he sat at our table when he visited our parish so many months ago…but he had a friend he spent most of his time talking to and then had to go back to mission in church.

Yes…I will ask him source of info about AIDS cover up in Russia…never heard it…

Yes, Pere Lamy died in early 1930’s and yes, a private revelation…just like Fatima. I read his reflections and they resonated…

Twentieth century was worst century of mankind…

And Jharek will get back to read your post…

As far as I am concerned…we are all equal before God. No one is more innocent than the other…

But…I do believe communism does not have the same reaction as Naziism, which was most blatant and out in the open.

Fatima is an approved appartion by the Church.

I don’t think any of this by Lamy is necessarily approved and that’s not fair to the Fatima apparition to make such a comparison.

Not sure if Father Lamy has been beatified either, a Blessed, etc.

No, he is not beatified…I was at Fatima and my hosts pointed out to me an elderly man who had seen the miracle of the sun.

I thought Jacinta was now blessed. The experiences of the seers vs Pare Lamy are different…but in his quiet way, I also experienced prophetic truth for our times. The fact that he lived in the prior century but foresaw the great forthcoming inhumanity to man as we witnessed in the 20th century was remarkable.

Nevertheless, in the Church, both Fatima and Lamy are on equal footing: they are both private revelations, he has not been condemned or contradicted.

And I especially see Pope Pius XII as most exceptional in his leadership during WWII and am praying for his cause.

They are not on equal footing. There has been no decision on Father Lamy’s visions. It is not approved in any way.

Fatima like Lourdes, Knock Ireland and a few other apparitions are approved and approved by the Vatican.

I totally agree with what you are saying, Broom…

But likewise, there are countless mystics who have been in the Church addressing our times, whether they are blessed, beatified…

I know ordinary Catholics who go to Mass and are sensing the same things about the condition of the world that it is in right now.

When I gave Pere Lamy’s foresight into the future…I was resonating with the fact that the 20th century caused more deaths to humanity than any other time.

The issue is the loss of humanity, the loss of faith and its effect in the world, and how Pope Pius XII was shepherding the Church in a most difficult time, and is most worthy of becoming a canonized saint.

The fact is that if Pope Pius had made himself into an overt public enemy of Hitler’s reign, the Catholic Church’s influence would have been marginalized in Europe and the Pope would not have been able to work in secrecy below the radar establishing safe-houses and saving the lives of countless jews.

It also doesn’t help that the secular media is viciously anti-Catholic in how it reports history. Pope Pius did in fact publicly oppose the Nazi’s as well, we just don’t hear about that… 🙂
Several years ago, I attended a program on Italy’s role in rescuing Jews which naturally included a discussion of Pius. It was fascinating. I consider myself to be well-educated and I never heard most of it, particularly how many Italian Axis officers ignored German orders to deport Jews. The panel included an elderly woman who had survived one of the concentration camps, and when the inevitable question about the Pope arose, another panelist gave the same explanation, i.e. that if he had been more outspoken, the persecution of the Jews would have been much worse. Not suprisingly, several people (incidentally too young to have had firsthand knowledge of the war) disagreed rather vocally but then the woman stood up, pointed at them and shouted, “And it would have been worse! You don’t know how much worse!”

I had been to Assisi the previous summer and at the time had no idea that it was the major haven described in that program. My base for that trip was a small convent in Rome, practically right on St. Peter’s square, whose chapel was donated by an American woman in gratitude for being hidden there as a small child along with her family. This was on orders of the pope. Jews and other refugees were hidden throughout the Vatican grounds and in churches, monasteries, and convents all over Italy, all on orders of the pope.

Incidentally, my father met him when he was stationed in Italy in the early '50s. The Army arranged for some Catholic GIs to have a private audience and that’s how it happened. Whenever I asked him what it was like to meet the pope, he always said, “He was there but he wasn’t there. I don’t know how to explain it.” I still wonder what he meant.

Pius XII has long been vilified as “Hitler’s pope”, accused of failing publicly to condemn the genocide of Europe’s Jews. Now a British author has unearthed extensive material that Vatican insiders believe will restore his reputation, revealing the part that he played in saving lives and opposing nazism. Gordon Thomas, a Protestant, was given access to previously unpublished Vatican documents and tracked down victims, priests and others who had not told their stories before.
Doesn’t matter. There is no “evidence” to refute. The “Hitler’s Pope” was a smear campaign from the beginning that took advantage of anti-Catholic bigotry. All the facts in the world won’t change the beliefs of those that refuse to see.

That is the sad truth for many, I am afraid.

And that is true of both liberal/secular groups and the religious anti-catholics as well as the far-right anti-semites (neo nazis, fasists etc) themselves.

“Exonerate”? Because he was definitely, unambiguously found guilty of something? I thought everyone knew and understood that “Hitler’s Pope” was a lie manufactured by communists and opportunistically parroted by the leftist propaganda machine, uttered only by cynical liars or useful idiots, only the latter of whom actually believed it.

For those whose souls are in need of illumination of grace and truth, many believe the lie.

Thank you Stellina, for sharing your experience.

I did not realize either just how much the Vatican had sheltered the Jewish people. Thanks for more sharing in regards to your time in Assisi. I was there, but in those times Pope Pius’ name was never mentioned, early 70’s. It is insightful what you shared about the Italian
Axis’ position. I have worked with a number of Jewish clients, and they especially fond of Italians.

There is a memoir / biography about Pope Pius XII’s housekeeper. It revealed how many thousands of Jewish refugees found sanctuary in the Vatican. Cardinal Spelman of New York used to smuggle money in using his diplomatic passport; he collected the money from the people of New York. The housekeeper used the money to buy food for the Jewish refugees. For some unknown reason, the Nazi’s respected official identification papers, so the Vatican forged fake identity papers saying the Jews were Catholics. The forger was a man named Roncali; he became Pope John XXIII. The Jews were then taken by train … Vatican Railways … to the nearby seaport … and then taken by ship to safety.

WE STILL TO THIS DAY DO NOT KNOW WHERE THEY WENT.

I am guessing to Spain because everywhere else was either too hostile or too far away.

In any event, hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees who found their way to the Vatican were taken to a safe haven.

We KNOW that these records exist.
