I heard a priest on Catholic Radio state that the Mass needs to be more reverent - period. No more guitars and so on. It needs to be more conducive to worship.

Well, that is an opinion, that is, what makes a Mass conducive to worship is an opinion. That priest surely has the authority to address in his parish what he sees would make his Masses more reverant.

Fair enough but I think only one Pope called it “new.” It is now de facto officially the Forma Ordinaria of the same rite. “New” rites were also anathematized by Trent. Just saying.

From memory the only changes anathematized were changes to the rite promulgated by Trent itself. None (or no major one’s) have ever been made to that rite. Trent did away with rites that had sprung up in the 200 years prior to the council, but that is not at all the same thing as saying no new rites or forms of rites were ever to be allowed in future.

Introducing a somewhat different form alongside that of Trent, which was what Paul VI did, is a very different thing to tinkering with the Tridentine form itself.

What Church teaching is that? I am unfamiliar with this topic ever being addressed, although I know announcements are allowable.

The basic idea of how we should behave in Church is summed up by the Second Council of Lyons, A.D. 1274:

It is fitting that He Whose abode has been established in peace should be worshipped in peace and with due reverence. Churches, then, should be entered humbly and devoutly; behaviour inside should be calm, pleasing to God, bringing peace to the beholders, a source not only of instruction but of mental refreshment. Those who assemble in church should extol with an act of special reverence that Name which is above every Name, than which no other under Heaven has been given to people, in which believers must be saved, the Name, that is, of Jesus Christ, Who will save His people from their sins. Each should fulfil in himself that which is written for all, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow; whenever that glorious Name is recalled, especially during the sacred Mysteries of the Mass, everyone should bow the knees of his heart, which he can do even by a bow of his head. In churches the sacred solemnities should possess the whole heart and mind; the whole attention should be given to prayer.

My original comment about irreverence was regarding clapping during mass. I guess all I can find on this topic right now is from ‘Fisheaters.com’ that states:

Never applaud in church for any reason.

Like ‘don’t chew gum in church’ Maybe not ever spelled out by the Vatican, but makes sense, eh?
