It’s important to distinguish the pre-conciliar church in the USA from the pre-conciliar church in Europe.
In Europe, the decline of the Church was a real fact. Countries like France-- one known as solidly Catholic-- were in the final throws of secularization that began with the French Revolution. Spain was closing Churches, Eastern Europe was leaving Rome pretty quickly.
In the USA, it was entirely the opposite. The 50’s through 1965 were a real golden age for the Church in the States. Mass attendence had never been higher; conversions, ordinations, religious orders, Catholic schools, Catholic marriages, solid orthodoxy and real Catholic practice was at its absolute peak before the Council.
I always recommend to people interested in learning more about the Church before and after the Council to try and find The Index of Leading Catholic Indicators. The book has fallen out of print, but tradtional bookstores usually know how to get copies. The Index is just a book of charts and graphs with VERY LITTLE commentary other than the numbers. Spending an hour with the book will show you the total dismantlement of the Church in America after the Council. It’s enough to make you feel very sad.
Politico (and fellow Catholic) Pat Buchanan wrote the forward to the book. His wording is over-the-top rhetoric (and a classic example of Buchanan’s style), but it’s striking. The forward is reprinted here and shows the real toll the Council took on the Church. In the USA, moderization didn’t mean survival, it meant massacre.
