What should be the theme of the Third Vatican Council? What do you think should change in the Catholic Church?

I would favor pushing further in the direction that Vatican II went: reducing reliance on Church authority in favor of argument and persuasion and greater involvement of the laity in the Church.

What challenges should the Catholic Church be focusing on?

I think there are several:
  1. The deChristianization of Europe.
  2. The relative poverty of the Catholicsphere.
  3. The dearth of priests (and related problems).
  4. The persistence of Protestantism.

I do think we could use another council clarify confusing issues brought on from Vatican II. When you say deChristianization of Europe, what about the deChristianization of the Americas??? Some changes I would feel necessary would be changes in the lectionary. I think a translation like the Douay-Rheims would benefit Catholics that are confused about what happens in scripture. Today’s bibles focus on readability rather than correctness. Another issue I would like to see addressed is the dress code. I think we need to revert to the dress code before Vatican II on this one. I do think that another council reaffirming what Vatican II addressed and reaffirm what Catholic believe like the Council of Trent is exactly what we need. Not many changes in the mass but just reaffirming what Catholics believe

At this time in the history of the Church, there is no need for another Ecumenical Council. We are just beginning to see the fruits of Vatican II due to the fact that it is now beginning to be implemented correctly. Rather than another Council, I think we should wait patiently for the Church to come to terms with Vatican II and implement it fully. All of the post Vatican II pontiffs have made this their mission, and I believe the works of Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI will reveal to the Church what the Council truly was: a tremendous out-pouring of Grace for the Church in modern times.

When you say deChristianization of Europe, what about the deChristianization of the Americas???
This probably deserves to be a thread of its own but my impression is that deChristianization in America is simply monkey-see, monkey-do emulation of Europe. Americans who leave Christianity are almost always Americans who think Europe is a model culturally, socially, and politically.

The resurrection of The Church Militant.

We are at war with the Culture of Death so pervasive across the world. We must return to the purity and sanctity of early Christianity if we are to be victorious.

After all, we are fighting neo-paganism, just as the Apostles fought paganism.

Two hasn’t been implemented yet ;).

👍 Good idea

reducing reliance on Church authority in favor of argument and persuasion and greater involvement of the laity in the Church.

**I’m all in favour of reducing Papalism in the Church, but there must be authority & there must be law. That said, I would like to see the Papacy become first among equals, instead of being a sort of lord over the rest of the episcopate, & there is a strong case for it to cease to be immune to judgement by others. What is not be desirable is that the exercise ofauthority should give way to endless talking. There’s far too much talk & far too much bureaucracy as it is. I think it is desirable that some things that have been changed, should be restored: such as provincial councils, & the presence at them of Papal legates. Another change would be to make canonisation much more difficult, as it should be: I’ve a lot of ideas about this. At present, it suffers from hyperinflation **😦

Protestantism persists for many different reasons…

I wonder, Gottle, if this would help in dealing with what Bubba calls the “persistence” of protestantism.

I doubt it 🙂 . OTOH, it could help to relax some of the strain in relations between Rome & Protestantism.

Since Vatican I gave the pope the power to decide dogmatic issues on his own, it is extremely unlikely there will ever be another dogmatic ecumenical council.

Vatican II set up the Synod of Bishops as a a mechanism to achieve pastoral results without the need for calling an ecumenical council, so there isn’t much point in having another pastoral ecumenical council.

Thus, it seems that there will never be another ecumenical council for the Catholic Church, unless it is part of a reconciliation with the Orthodox Churches.

Could make some things less necessary to belive in like the Mary-stuff. Could tighten up the NO or get rid of either it or the Tridentine Right all together. Church hopping from one TR to the other irritates me.

Which “Mary-stuff” are you referring to and what would be an example of making it “less necessary” to believe in?

orgiinal sin/immaculate conception and the assumption. Also anyone mentioning the words ‘co-redemptrix’ should be shot (though thats not a belief atm)

If these things have been revealed to the Church, she has no authority to pretend they haven’t. OTOH, if they have not been revealed to the Church, she has no authority to pretend they have.

well i am aware that it wont change I’m just stating what I would like to be changed that’s all. lol

I’ve never quite understood this phrase “First Among Equals”]. What does it mean?
This is a philosophy that a church needs SOMEBODY in charge for administrative purposes, but the person in charge has no special doctrinal office or authority.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is “first” in Anglican leadership among other “equals” (other Anglican bishops). Same goes for the Patriarch of Constantinople, the leader of the Greek Orthodox.

The authority of “first among equals” is temporal only. It does not extend to spiritual matters.

Catholics have this model to some degree - Cardinals are “first among equals” with regard to other Bishops. But the Pope exercises spiritual authority beyond that of a Bishop.

Of course, the Catholic Church could not apply this leadership model to the Pope, as the distinctive role of the Pope has been already established by the First Vatican Council.

And therein lies one of the great issues of Catholicism: Couldn’t the Third Vatical Council trim the Pope’s authority back to a “frist among equals” admin/leadership role? Alas, that would require at least an implicit acknowledgement that eiether Vatican I or Vatical III was not inspired by the Holy Spirit.

ACouldn’t the Third Vatical Council trim the Pope’s authority back to a “frist among equals”
What are the arguments that a council should do this? When has a recent Pope acted out-of-line on declaring a matter of faith or morals?
