Was his prior relationship with Cardinal Ratzinger supportive or strained? Certainly his statement is supportive of Pope Benedict.

I am not sure if Catholic/Islamic relations are back to square one, although certainly they have taken a couple steps backward. Of course, I am not as well informed as Cardinal Lehman so I might be wrong.

But I think there is still good to be drawn from the controversy. Pope John Paul showed how good relations could be, and Pope Benedict is taking a 'get tough" approach. Carrots and sticks work much better together than either one alone.

Nice to see some Bishops supporting our Holy Father 👍

One thing I found interesting in the article:
Meeting shortly after a Berlin theater canceled a Mozart opera for fear it might prompt Muslim protests, the bishops also expressed concern about self-censorship over religion.
Why was the Mozart opera conceled? Just because His Holiness likes Mozart

Deutsche Oper Berlin was going to perform Mozart’s Idomeneo. But the director had added a scene to the opera in which the heads of various gods (including Jesus) and of Mohammed are pulled out of a bag.

Ehrhart Koerting, Berlin’s state Interior Minister made some vague comments about security concerns. Citing those concerns, the director of the opera then cancelled the performance.

Koerting has stated that the cancellation was a mistake. The director of the opera has coyly hinted that she might consider reinstating it. I think the whole thing smells a little like free publicity and a means to stir up interest in the opera.

This is good. Hopefully Islam and Catholicism will have peaceful relations again and also hopefully any tension will end. I also hope that Muslims will convert to Catholicism en mass.

Not too bad then. We need to bring back some culture 👍
